Yes, last time 1961. There were 7 major hurricanes that year. 1950...8 major hurricanes that year...

An update today 5:30pm:
It looks like the situation described here might not totally relate to this year. Now that Bonnie formed from the Gulf of Mexico system, we might not compare this year with others that had the first 2 systems becoming majors. It lost its relevance, IMO. I don't think Bonnie has a chance of becoming a Cat 2 hurricane, much less a major hurricane.
