SPECIAL TROPICAL DISTURBANCE STATEMENT
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
945 AM EDT MON AUG 9 2004

A STRONG TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED JUST EAST OF TOBAGO IN THE WINDWARD
ISLANDS IS MOVING WESTWARD AT 20 TO 25 MPH. SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BECOME MUCH BETTER ORGANIZED OVERALL THIS
MORNING...AND SURFACE PRESSURES HAVE FALLEN SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE
WINDWARD ISLANDS. BARBADOS REPORTED A WIND GUST TO 53 MPH DURING
THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS.

THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO SIGNS OF A WELL-DEFINED SURFACE CENTER.
HOWEVER...IF THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP ALONG THE WAVE
AXIS...THEN A CLOSED CIRCULATION COULD FORM AND THE SYSTEM COULD
BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION OR A TROPICAL STORM LATER TODAY OR
TUESDAY. WIND GUSTS TO TROPICAL STORM FORCE MAY OCCUR OVER MUCH OF
THE WINDWARD ISLANDS TODAY...ESPECIALLY OVER HIGHER TERRAIN.
INTERESTS IN THE WINDWARD ISLANDS AND THE EASTERN AND CENTRAL
CARIBBEAN SEA SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM
OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

And everyone thinks that the area N of Yucatan will be Bonnie.. Looks like there could be a race between the two systems we are watching for naming rights. Any bets on which gets a name first and why?

I'm thinking that unless one of them is looking significantly better organized than the other... that 93 will get the name before ExTD2... if only because it may affect land before ExTD2. Although if ExTD2 looks as good from recon as people seem to think it will- there might be Bonnie there.

I think we'll see Bonnie today- but I think it's a coin flip as to which storm it will be... we might also see Charley.

Barbados is still reporting some pretty impressive winds. Last report at 10 a.m. had 27 knot sustained, 41 knot gusts. If they get a report of a W wind down there (at least one Trinidad reporting station reported SSW and WSW winds in the past few hours), they may just go straight to a TD. We'll see...

With those winds in Trinidad my bet is on 93L being upgraded first. You can be sure NHC is closely monitoring all the reporting stations near 93L. That is part of the reason no flight is scheduled there yet, imo. Plenty of stations to get info from as it passes the islands. Look for recon to be scheduled there for tomorrow if it stays like it is presentation wise.

WOW... I'm not sure Bonnie will be in the Gulf. May have Charley in the Gulf!!! :eek:
