The Barometer Bob Show for tonight will air live at 9pm/edt.

I will have Derek Ortt as my special guest. We will discuss what else, the tropics. Listen in for a very informative discussion. The toll free numbers will be opened during the show. I will also be in Teamspeak, so drop in and join the discussion!!!

Area of Interest
8-4-04/9:00pm/edt

Well I have been amused by some of the models. The MRF last week took a weak tropical depression right along the Greater Antilles. Mind you, this was because of it being a Tropical Depression. But, it's an open wave. Does this bring any memories from 2003?
If it doesn't let me remind you. LILI!!!!
Lili actually made TS status prior to being down graded to an open wave, then regenerated in the central Caribbean near Jamaica. Then moved into the Gulf of Mexico and took aim at Louisiana, the rest is history.
Let me explain.
being this system is a wave, it will be steered by a deep layered east to west tropical wind flow, which moves right smack dab through the Caribbean. The Atlantic Ridge is going to do be shunted east a bit, due to this abnormally strong trough for this time of year. This will allow the wave to slow down, and turn westnorthwestward. As this occurs, the slow down mainly, if there is still a low pressure associated with this wave, we could very well see some reorganization as it enters the Northwestern Caribbean on a westnorthwest track. If this does occur, the reorganization, and some strengthening, then the system will end up in the Southern Gulf of Mexico.
With a organizing tropical wave/depression moving into the Gulf of Mexico, and yet another trough sliding southward across the Central Plains.
The GFS takes the wave west across the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Bay of Campeche. No Development.
The NOGAPS takes the wave west and westnorthwest into the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
The MRF still pulls this wave across Eastern Hispanola. This is due to poor initialization based on a slightly stronger system. If this still does occur, then it's of no concern. But the MRF still shows an impulse tracking westnorthwest just on the southern side of the Greater Antilles.
In anyways, lets just keep an eye on the wave as it tracks through the Caribbean. This wave will still have to overcome shear and dry air in the GOM.
I have learned one thing. Every year there is a thorn storm, and it can create some problems with our friends over at NOAA!!!
Elsewhere, a very strong tropical wave has exited Africa. Even though based on satellite imagery convection is limited along the ITCZ. But in the WV you can see how alrge this wave actually is.
We have plenty of time to monitor these areas, and while the server is down for routine maintenence I will be taking some much needed rest this evening. On Thursday, I will be preparing for the Barometer Bob Show tomorrow evening.
Till then, Keep an Eagle Eye out to the Sky!!!!
