slow starts but not slow years

#1 Postby frederic79 » Mon Jul 26, 2004 5:06 pm

Since 1958, the earliest year NHC archives include, there have been 9 hurricanes that made landfall at an intensity of 945 mb or stronger. For the most part, the years they formed were what we would consider slow starters.

1960 Abbey formed July 10
1961 Anna formed July 20
1969 Anna formed July 23
1970 Alma formed May 17* (Becky formed July 19)
1980 Allen formed July 31
1985 Ana formed July 15
1989 Allison formed June 24
1992 Andrew formed Aug 16 (July 47)
1995 Allison formed June 3

If you dismiss the anomalous Alma (1970), the average date on which the season began for years since 1958 that had landfalling hurricanes of 945 mb or less is July 15.

I mention this only because late starting seasons do not necessarily mean quiet seasons.

*Hurricane Alma was only the second May hurricane since 1900.

Why include 1995? June 3rd is an early start. :)

I included ALL years that included hurricanes that made landfall at an intensity of 945 mb or stronger since 1958. Of those, only 2 started early and one started in late June. The rest were July and August starts. I listed 1970 as an exception because it's May A-storm was extremely unusual.
