New Poll=How many named storms will form in august?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Thu Jul 22, 2004 6:29 pm

If this season is going to be active as the experts like Dr Gray,NOAA haved said in their outlooks august has to be a very active month.Being the case that so far no named storms even no tropical depressions haved formed although some close calls haved occured I asume august has to boil in activity and I will say that (4) named systems will form in august.I also included no named storms will form in august because you never know if conditions are such that activity may be capped.

Note=This poll is for the month of august only. Also this is for formation of named storms only not includes hurricanes forming from those and it not includes where they will form but if any of you want to say where they will form that is ok you can say that: :) .

One storm will form later in August---people will think this season is a dudd as they say every year... but during September, we will be tracking many storms--and at times, 3 or 4 at once and we will still have a very busy season as was expected from the beginning---remember 1995  .

Ok good dude and that is why I posted that last option about no developments in august because things may cap big time and as we know the tropics has always surprises.Imagine august without any named storms how the words boring, dud and sentences like I am throwing the towel on this season will be posted etc, etc, etc. :)

I agree. A very active, late season seems possible, but certainly we'd have to see at least 1 in August. :)

I know I have said this many times, but remember 1998!

5 named storms in August. Alex, Bonnie, Charley, Danielle, and Earl.

Also, during a one week period at the end of August, Hurricane Bonnie, TS Charley, and Hurricane Earl all made landfall on the U.S.

Then there was the parade of hurricanes in September.

For some reason my gut said to go with one. I do think it is most likely in the middle of august(ive been sticking to this theory for awhile now).... however i suppose i could also forsee some development later in august to make it 2, but I have a feeling we will remember august as having one named system develop.

I have a feeling this year we are going to have storms lined up in a row from the africa coast to U.S. coast.

Just a little stat for ya folks...

Based on the 1974-2003 seasons...

There were, on average, 3 tropical storms to form in the month of August. Of those storms, 1.7 became hurricanes. Of those, 0.83 became major hurricanes.

The most active August within the past 30 years was the 1995 season where 7 tropical storms formed. Of those, 4 became hurricanes with 2 becoming major hurricanes.

The least active August within the past 30 years was the 1997 season where no storms formed whatsoever.

There were 5 seasons where only one named storm formed: 1992, 1991, 1986, 1982, and 1977.

And all of those were El Nino years. 1977 (Anita), 1991 (Bob), and 1992 (Andrew) were major hurricanes.

Since there is no El Nino to affect the season (it would have had to form by now), I'm still saying this season is gonna simply be a late-bloomer.
