Where is your computer?

#1 Postby coriolis » Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:49 pm

What room(s) are the computer(s) in your house. How does the location affect your routine?

We have two side by side in the dining room. They share a cable modem through a network hub and I have two IP addresses. (I got the hub for free, surplus from work). The computers are right there in the middle of all the family action. We can keep an eye on what the kids are looking at, and my wife and I can keep an eye on each other. (no adult sites for me, no shopping sites for her - LMAO). Right now, the kids are playing cards on the dining room table and I'm typing away here.

Sometimes we'll both be here side-by-side doing our things. There still is a little competition, because the #1 computer has most of the games she likes plus the word processor, and all my budgets, spreadsheets, etc. The kids use the #2 a lot because its a little more stable (Win NT) with a lot of the on-line games they play. This one tends to lock up on those games (Win ME)
But they will get on the same site simultaneously and compete on the same games.

OK, enough from me.

Mine in my basement bedroom...Dad in his second floor office...we both have eMachines and share a Netgear...which is located by my computer. :) Sometimes at night...especially a Friday or Saturday one...I have to be sure to not shut down my 'puter w/out first 'paging' Dad on our Westinghouse speaker boxes to let him know that I'm ready to call it a day and 'retire'. If he's not quite ready to go to bed...I go ahead and just turn off my monitor. Now at least twice in the past since having this system set-up...and yes I've learned my lesson...fortunately didn't have to go to 'Three's a charm'...I shut-down and a few minutes later Dad calls and says...Eric, my internet went down. Yes, due to our common Netgear box...his internet goes down if I prematurely shut down my unit!

LOL  ...but YES, Dad...I've learned my lesson! :D

One in my "Weather room" which is the one my wife and I use. One in my sons room. An old Mac on the floor in our bedroom till we reformat it and give it away. The two working comps come in through the cable modem and router.

I have an office just inside and to the left of the front entrance to our home. Go the right and you step into the living room. Another family might make this into a den; a bedroom; a TV room. I have my computer here, and it is my space away from the world...yet my space that takes me 'round the world.

Today alone, I got a message and pics from a weather friend in Hoorn, The Netherlands. I heard from an old weather friend from TWC boards, Jen in Iowa. I got a wonderful note from Pawlee back in Illinois. I found out the daughter of a family friend is going to be a bone marrow donor for a man who needs a second chance. She lost her dad to a brain tumor about 10 years ago...and wants to give this man a chance her own dad never had.

So my office is my connection on the world...a place where my eyes and fingers and hands and heart all come together.

My time here is special.

We're an equal opportunity house. My computer is in our bedroom, my wife's is out in the living room, and the girls each have their own. All are connected through a Linksys router by my computer. I monitor (with their understanding) the girls computers. They learned long ago not to try and fool Father Nature ;-) The wife is a big girl so she's on her own. ;-) I do have Symantec's anti-virus installed on all of teh computers and they all get their updates from mine. My computer downloads virus updates every morning so we're pretty secure on that front. Bliss is everyone with their own TV's and computers!

My computer is in the "computer room".. I guess this room is supposed to be a dining room, but it has carpeting... Now how many of you, with kids, are going to put a dining room table on off white carpeting? I took out the ugly light fixture that was in here (everytime is walked through the room I hit my head on it) and put in a ceiling fan... Also a 55 gallon fish tank, and a 29 gallon tank.. a recliner and a bookshelf... nice and cozy!

Our dining room is white carpeted! lol

We have an office off to the right of the front foyer entrance...We have 2 desks set up in here, and TV to watch the fires while I'm typing...Our computer station is on one of these desks, we do all of our book keeping and letter writing on the second desk. The computer is front of a large window at computer height, so there is always a cool breeze and warm sunshine flooding the room...

We also keep our wine jail in here...As Steve said, the office is my little escape place too, keeping me in touch with friends and family from around the globe...
Our son has a computer in his room, and our garage has 2, not hooked up.

My computer is in my bedroom. My bed is right behind me.

My mother goes online a bit, for e-mail and surfing. My father doesn't want to know anything about the internet, and doesn't want to learn.

In our home office....with the fax machine and other home office products, this too, is my little refuge. I've got the police scanner set up in here, with the radio too......the window sized air conditioner is in the office window, cools down the whole house.

Computer room, between the living room/dining room and my bedroom. The computer sits up against my bedroom wall. :) I'm the one on it 95% of the time.

I have a nice set-up in my room. The family computer is downstairs, and either my mom or my sister are on it most of the time. My previous computer is now sitting collecting dust in the corner of the room; it could easily be used in my parents' room if we could ever find a proper networking card for it (Phoneline/HPNA), but without one it has no 'net access and is rendered nearly useless.

Here is my desk and below it a shot of below the desk (PC tower and Logitech z-560 sub):

My 1 year and a couple of weeks old Dell, which I paid for, is located in my basement bedroom. A nice little area to keep an eye on those thunderstorms from my little "bunker". Plus, I have an air ven right above my head to keep things cool (and me, too on days like today).

I am the host computer for the cable modem, which is sent through a router (one IP address) to two other computerrs, my brother's in his room, and my dad's makeshift office just outside my room.
