I've got a question...

This question deals with my job search guys so answers are welcome..

Monday morning in a last ditch effort to save me from moving out of here lol... I'm going to try a temp agency or 2 with my job search. This is my question..

What exactly does a temp agency do? and Is there anything specific I need to tell these people when I go into their building..? Just wondering out of curiosity..

I believe when you go to the temp agency they will have you do a typing test and ask what your job skills are. They will then try to find someone that needs you and place you there according to your skills.

BE CAREFULL with a TEMP agency!!!!!

They Will test you they will get you a job that shows your best skills HOWEVER they will also (some) take money away from each of your checks for their services! Some are upfront about it some are not.. I would recomend that you get your check from the company NOT THE TEMP service!

I know this because I have used Kelly Services Temp agancy and they SCREWED me.

I used to work for temp agenceys before. Some are good and some arent. Some say they get alot of jobs and never seem to call you. However it is good to find a good one to work for they can get you some fun jobs.

Another thing to watch out for, some keep you under contract with them, while others actually let you go to become a full time hire after they have you matched to an employer who wants to keep you. Those are the good ones.

The bad ones probably get paid twice as much for your services as they pay you. That same employee who may love you and wish they could hire you permanently will pay the agency $30/hr, while the agency pays you $10.

I used a temp agency, looking to get some sort of office job or something...and they put me in a factory, cleaning machinery from canada so it could be resold. I was told it would be like changing oil and I would get alittle dirty, but instead I was covered in grease and oil. It was the pits if you ask me. Just my two cents

I had worked through a temporary agency when I was laid off from my job in 1995. It was through AccuTemp and I ended up working at the place that they sent me for about 3 weeks before I found my next job. I believe that I was paid through the temporary agency and I don't think that I paid anything to them - they charged the company an hourly rate for my services and I got a portion of that.

It doesn't hurt to try the temp agency route John, but you've been given alot of good advice by the others. Just don't stop looking for another job on your own in the meantime.

Well you have to fill out what type of work you're gonna want to do. Manual Labor, key punching etc. I worked in a factory the summer after highschool through a temp agency so i would learn to "work hard". It was a good experience and i learned my lesson

A temp agency would be a way to get started and get some experience going. They do multiply your efforts for job seeking. No doubt, you are working for the temp agency. There should be a contract. Just read the contract carefully. They might try to rush you to sign it, but insist on taking your time to read it and ask questions. Once you understand it, then it's your choice whether to sign. Make sure that you understand how long the contract lasts, and what events can cause it to terminate. Also see if the contract has a clause that would try to prevent you from going to work for the company after your contract expires. The company may have an agreement with the temp agency to not do that. Where I used to work, they hired a lot thru temp agencies and some of the people eventually came on full time. I don't know how that happened. Also, some temp agencies may provide some benefits. You should ask about that.
Bottom line: Read and understand the contract before you sign it. Good luck!

Ed, that is great advice. We have hired several people from temp agencies. They were paid about 1/2 of what we paid the company and then could not come to work for us for and extended period of time due to the contract they had signed. They are great at finding a job for you but not great at paying you for the job that you do.

If job experience is what you need, you'll find it with them. You may have to pay a high price, but it might be worth it.

I worked for a temp agency several years ago ....I had no real job experience to speak of and I needed a job in a hurry. The agency placed me with a good company that paid me well, and they allowed me to be hired on with the company only a couple of months later. They charged the company I worked for a fee, so even though I received my paychecks through the temp agency, I was paid all my hourly wages. Overall it was a good experience and something I think is worth looking into, especially if you really need a paycheck soon.
Temp agencies can also be good for getting you into fields of work that normally require experience. For example, I have a friend who wanted to be a leasing agent for an apartment complex, but most management companies around here only hire people who have previous experience. She went to a temp agency that worked with some of these management companies, and filled a temporary position with one of them for 3 months. They trained her in all the job-specific computer programs, and after that she had no problem finding a permanent position.
Everyone elses advice was good, though - make sure you know what the agency wants from you before you sign anything and you should be OK :wink:
