Help!!

#1 Postby Amanzi » Mon Jun 21, 2004 1:27 pm

I cut my finger open on a can lid last night at around 6. I had opened the can and the lid would just not come off with the opener, so being the fool I am, I grabbed the lid and pulled. Well I pulled the sharp edge right into my flesh. It bled really badly, so I just put pressure on it and covered it up after cleaning it. Problem is now its STILL bleeding and wont close. My finger is really swollen and throbbing horribly.  I know I should have had it stitched yesterday (I did not want to ruin my husbands fathers day, and being a Sunday no doctors were open... I have no insurance so you can guess why I was reluctant to go to the ER) Question is.... it needs about 5 stiches to close the wound which goes almost to the bone and right around in a circle, is it too late for me to have it sewn closed????? I know after so many hours they cant stich it (well thats what I was told anyway)

OUCH.. typing is no fun right now.

You definitely need to see a dr and will probably need anti-biotics to prevent infection. Nothing to play around with, Bron!!!

When is the last time you had a tetanus shot? You may need one of those too.

Sorry to hear about this Bronnie. :(

Thanks for the advice guys...

I now have 6 stiches and had to have a tetnus. Can you belive that as soon as I got back from the doc (Im lucky his practice is 2 roads away, so he saw me straight away) I walked my neighbors dog... which decided to take a chunk out of my toe with its teeth.. Today is just one of those days when my bed looks like the safest places to be

Bron the time to get stitches is immediately after an injury. Now the wound has had a chance to get contaminated before it was sutured..and the suturing seals the bacteria in there providing a perfect place for them to grow. Hope you have antibiotics. You need to watch the wound carefully for signs of infection such as yellowish drainage, increasing swelling and redness. If any of these occir you need to get back to the doctor.

Bronnie, you've gotten much good advice -
also, keep an eye out, afterward,
like george said!

As for the toe, hopefully you have learned
to walk that dog wearing steel-toed shoes? ;)

Take care of you!

Have a look at this, Bron.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3787867.stm

Not the type of info you're likely to hear from mainstream docs.

A couple years ago I had something similar happen.. I sliced my finger on a can of cat food..

The next day I went to my schools' athletic trainer and he bandaged it up for me and everyday I put Neosporin on it.

It healed in a couple weeks.. But I have a permanent reminder because it left a scar

Bron - you're having a bad week! You poor girl! I had a rough spell recently too (sprained ankle, slammed a finger in a pocket door, etc.). Things seem to come in three's. So I suggest right now you find a good book, or pick up your sweet baby and sit in a rocker! Don't venture out, don't walk your neighbor's dog, etc. LOL I'm hoping this is the end of your what I call 'rough patch'. Take care of that hand. I think we've all done things like this (can opener incident) and you think later - why did I do that? You just want to kick yourself (please don't do that, no more injuries!!!).

Hugs.

Mary
