As always, the Weather Channel is behind with the information concerning tropical activity. According to the last Tropical Update at 5:50 EDT they talked about TD 7W when since this morning the system was classified as a TS. This is not surprising me since this is always occurring.

They might be calling it TD 7W because in the JTWC, they have different classifications for Tropical Storm strength. That is why you can have TS 7W, but no name. I'm actually surprised they talked about that. Normally they give a brief look at the Atlantic, give the names, and go back to storm watch.

The reason why the JTWC waits to name a tropical storm is this. Based on the WMO's classifications and guidelines, winds are to be measured in the US off of a 1-minute average, thus leading to higher values. The rest of the world measures their winds in a 10-minute average. To give an example of this, 07W is classified by the JTWC (using a 1-minute average) as a 55 mph tropical storm. However, the JMA and the rest of the world sees 07W as a 35 mph tropical depression. The JTWC will not name 07W until the JMA (in this case) upgrades the system into a tropical storm.
This also means that the wind reports you see around the world are actually much higher when compared to our standards.
