I AGREE WITH THE FACT THAT Frances should not be retired, because i really see no relationship between the name of a storm and a country.
But,why some guys are talking with so animousity or "lol" about this country?During a time we are celebrating the D DAY,of June 6 1944 when a lot of young américan boys gived their life for liberty in France and Europe!I got a great respect for the US.
What i think is that we should have never to talk of "politic",or religion on this board;this the better way to offence someone!!!
So, what do you think of the wave nearing the Antilies?

Sorry if you were offended HUC.. Was not the intention of anyone, but you are right.. This is the Tropic board not the off topic board ;-) BTW.. Great to have you here with us.. Great to have other perspectives!

I also cannot stand the WMO, Scott. Some of their decisions leave much to be desired.

Regarding the retirement, total BS if you ask me. This world is far to sensitive. Time for some to act as adults and not be offended as little school girls are

Remember all the trouble the TV guys had pronouncing Georges?

The WMO should just drop French names all together. Too hard to pronounce for US TV guys...and in all honesty...Frances could be a Cat 5 and people wouldn't be intimidated.

Hey! I think Georges was a neat hurricane name.

Personally, I like having French names on the lists. Gives more variety.

I think the names that are used to baptize tropical systems should be used without relating them with religion or political problems. Names are just given to tropical systems so they are remembered easily. Now, if they continue taking away names because they are political-related, or religious-related, in the next 50 or less years we would have not only to include Spanish, English, and French names, but also from others languages. For example, they took away "Adolph" in 2001 from the Eastern Pacific, simply because it was related to Adolf Hitler. Hello people, we are in the 21st century. Israel was not used because the problem in the Middle East, HELLO PEOPLE!!!. Also, if I'm not wrong they will never use FIDEL because Fidel Castro.

True...same should apply to the "ethnicity" of names.

Who cares what "color" a hurricane's name sounds like?

Billions of people out there, you're bound to offend somebody.

Ironically, one meteorologist remembers when they first started naming hurricanes, his wife's friends were asking if their names could be used.

As for Frances, let's relace her with "Francesca"!

Or maybe "Francine" or even "Frenchie"! (I'm just teasing)

I'm actually hoping Frances becomes a big storm this year, so she can at least be legitimately retired.

OK, I know that sounds sick. Sorry.

For that matter, just NAMING storms might as well just be offensive to those people!

OK, first women didn't like having all the storms having only female names. Then Sheila Jackson Lee says that there needs to be more African-American names on the lists (not to be or sound racist, but wouldn't any normal name be just as fine for an African-American as well?). Now the country of France is offended by our use of the name Frances, with an S at the end. So, HOW should we name hurricanes if using human names doesn't work?

Two words for those people I have mentioned:

Chill out.

I think they just want attention. But it's no big deal to me. "Frances" is a stupid name for a hurricane to begin with.

Maybe using animal names would be better. After all, they would not complain. They wouldn't care if we call a hurricane "Hurricane Dolphin", or if we call a tropical storm "Tropical Storm Octupus".

Hmm....I wonder how people would feel if they named a Hurricane "America" or "Americas" I imagine someone has that name out there in the world.

Someone suggested this before, and I'll bring it back up again ... name hurricanes after hard rock and metal bands ...

Can you imagine Hurricane Godsmack coming right for you?

Storm names are exactly that......STORM NAMES. and should be taken as such, whether the name originates in France, Canada, Iraq or wherever. Lets try as hard as possible to keep politics OUT of meteorology.
