This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What do you think about TWC coverage of the tropics?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Mon May 31, 2004 10:11 am

I find that the tropical updates haved gone downhill since John Hope is not there after he died.Although Steve Lyons trys hard to do something IMO is not sufficient and the time dedicated to the tropics is limited to 1 or 2 minutes the maximum. What are the opinions from all about TWC coverage of the tropics?

TWC's coverage is a huge disappointment. It's becoming the everything channel instead of being The Weather Channel.

I dislike Steve Lyons. (Please don't throw eggs or tomatoes please!) TWC is still okay for coverage of the tropics, but like everything else it does, its coverage has gone downhill.

TWC coverage of weather period stinks anymore... If a major cane were to strike the USA, they would be showing storm stories. Last nite-Major outbreak of tornadoes--what do they show--storm stories of past storms... As if people care about watching the same old re-run shows of past storms when they should have people live in the field showing what is going on like TWC used to do.

Dont recall storm stories being on during Isabel, but instead continuous coverage of the cane and nothing else was shown.

Did have dinner with Dr Lyons at the AMS confrence and he has indicated that there will be some new things for the upcoming season at TWC

I will say that I'd like Storm Stories a little more if they started showing new 1's instead of reruns..

I never liked it, John Hope was doing ok back then but when he died it really started to suck. TWC coverage of the tropics has never really been good. They dont explain where a system is going, how its being moved in that direction. Its all just if its there and its coordinates.

This is true and hopefully they wouldnt really show storm stories during a cane...but it seems that they have wayyyy less coverage than they used too. In years past, they would have had a crew live on the scene of the tornado outbreaks like the ones in the past week. So if they would canx storm stories for a cane this season and show continuous coverage, sounds like they would be sayying a cane wrecking lives on the east coast is worse than a major tornado outbreak wrecking lives in the midwest. Makes no sense to me.

I agree with Jekyhe32210, Major Tornadic activity in the midwest, but very little coverage of it from what I have seen. It is not like the severe weather this weekend was unexpected either. Seems like they could have been a little more prepared. I do enjoy watching storm stories though. I think I have seen most of them.

There can't be anything to talk about during TWC's Tropical Update when there is nothing in the Atlantic Basin to discuss.

If and when the Basin has even the least bit activity, they cover it... the busier it is the longer the updates will be. When a system is close to or making landfall they curtail there commercials some if not totally like the cable news stations do.

TWC

#15 Postby bevgo » Mon May 31, 2004 4:00 pm

At one time I stayed glued to TWC any time there was a storm. Their coverage was extensive and interesting. (Yeah, I love those reporters on the spot broadcasts). Now I wait until it is time for an updade and click it on to see what they say new but I spend most of my time on the internet browsing multiple venues.

I am addicted to hurricane tracking and would go into withdrawal if I could not get information on storms. I look forward to dragging my map out at the start of each season and I lovingly stow it away at the end so it will be ready.

I've been kind of disappointed since John Hope passed. Nothing against Steve Lyons, but he just don't have the charm that Hope possessed. Hopefully, this season will show a marked improvement in TWC tropical coverage. I hardly ever tune to TWC in the evening as all they seem to show are those stupid storm stories....MGC

I miss John Hope too. He was special, but I don't think TWC has ever covered the tropics well.
and they certainly don't cover the islands well.
I remmber when Hurricane Luis hit St Maarten, I was in the States. I could get no informaiton from St. Maarten..all communication was down.. I stayed glued to TWC and got almost nothing..they focused on PR and VI but nothing on any of the "foreign islands"
I learned more the next day from CNN than I did from TWC.

I believe TWC does a good job if you live in Hurricane areas and need passing info but lets face it, we here at S2K have more then a passing interest.

What I miss is a little more talk of a storms potential development at Invest time. When a system develops and gets near land, TWC coverage can become overwhelming. TWC is there for everyone and probably is not as specific to Hurricanes as our group here would like.

TWC also has tried to change with the times on TV and John Hope was definately a connection to the days when TWC was just about weather and did not have all the "Atmospheres" like specials. Finally, TWC came about when it was the only info, before the WWW made weather tools available at a click of the mouse.

Anyways, these are my thoughts, and do not represent the thoughts of S2K, the Admins, or the opinions of any of the Moderators. :)

TWC and the Tropics

#19 Postby Heroe » Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:38 pm

I live in Puerto Rico and I have relatives in Dominican Republic. Must agree with you all about the dissapointing coverage of TWC. It's a fact that here we can get valuable information and outlooks, and I'm talking about those invests and the waves just passing over west Africa.
