I have a confession

#1 Postby Pebbles » Sun May 30, 2004 5:14 pm

Guys..I am eyeballing my local radar....and for the first time in a long time...getting seriously wigged out. Anyone else in the target area's feeling the same? *blushes in shame* and here I am suppose to be a weather fanatic.

Local news channel flashing lots of warnings for counties south of us is a bit unnerving.

(i'm on the bottom of the + sign in +Chicago on the radar if anyone wonders)

I've had that feeling before too. Mainly when large tornadoes are on the ground and the cells are getting close to me.

Normally I get an adrenaline rush. However, the 5-4-03 storms brought me back to earth. Having a tornado spinning near your apartment building (without adequate underground shelter) is super scary. Mainly, those storms taught me humility. I no longer take for granted the weather. I always am keeping an eye on it.

Before then, I might have been gung-ho about severe weather in my area. Now, I don't wish for it. Don't know why people WANT severe weather in their area, but I'm not longer actively wishing it would hit in my area.

I know exacatly what you are saying snoppj!! I feel that way about Hurricanes after slmost 50 years of them including Camille and Alicia and that little ts Allison. Had more than enough to last me a lifetime!!!

Don't get me wrong, severe weather and hurricanes still get my adrenaline going and I will spot and chase, but I prefer they stay away from my area.

I can remember having to drive through an entire Tropical Storm's rain sheild. What made it worse was it seemed to increase the road rage as well.

Road rage is such a problem, and in heavy rain or bad weather it can be deadly.

Those cells ahead of the main complex up in the vicinity of the warm front are in an EXTREMELY well sheared environement -- through a deep layer in the lowest 6 KM, w/ effective SRH above 300 m2/s2, and BL- 6 KM vertical shear of up to 50 KT. This over top of impressive Instability, and SFC dewpoints of almost 74F over South Central IL and IN.

Westward backing of winds w/ height will continue to ensure that most of the more discrete cells ahead of the complex that i just mentioned stay tornadic.
