Is anyone else sick to death of the obsession with low carbs? This is one totally overdone word. Carb this, carb that, Heaven forbid you should eat or drink a CARB!!!!! :grr:

And then a report coming out about carbonated water in sodas being a potential risk for esophageal cancer last night on the news...

Perhaps...if one has a 6 pack of the fizz daily...but for the average Joe who has one on occasion...well, I'm not losing sleep on it.

Yes, I am so sick of hearing low carb this, that....ugh.

What I find ironic is that this whole campaign seemed to kick into high gear after New Year's. People were starting their "after the holidays" diet but somehow it really took on a life of it's own! Some good has come out of it though. Some fast food chain have eliminated super sized items, and are offering more healthy items. That's a good thing. And for once I began reading articles that state portion size in this country is way out of hand. Finally! I've been saying that for years! I have an old set of blue and white dishes, from my Mom. The dinner sized plate is about 9 inches across. On the small size compared to my everyday set I use. Just one example. Another is order any regular sized entree at an Olive Garden Restaurant and you can't finish it! If you ask for a lunch portion, sometimes you get a cranky waiter, assuming you're a cheapskate! Hardly the case. Sure it's nice to bring home leftovers but sometimes we just don't eat them. They don't taste as good as when first prepared.

Finally, I have to follow a specific diet now, so this low carb thing doesn't apply to me. Carbs are basically what I have to eat now! I try not to worry about it too much.

I can't believe that a low carb diet is a good life style change. Sunny, believe it or not I agree with you 100%. Don't get me wrong I love my meat, cheese, poultry and fish but gimme some pasta!!!

Mary, I agree with the portions. Wayyyyyy overdone in many restaurants. I really dislike leftovers and end up pitching them!!!

A well balanced diet is best.

Modified Rodney King quote -

"Can we all just please EAT?"

I just can't seem to jump in on the obsession...
...it may be that I NEED to, but, my grill is just way
too handy...of course, it's not chicken or seafood
on it - it's always a nice, thick, juicy steak!

The reality is...until we can find a way to be as motivated about what and how much we eat as we are about other fixations in our lives, we will always be seduced by the foods that we enjoy.

Quality and quantity are the biggest factors. I can almost certainly predict that there will be new studies coming out that show that too much red meat and too much protein can contribute to the risks of other diseases including heart disease.

The pendulum will swing many different ways...each of which will find people still eating too much of a good thing and mixing it with the foods they still enjoy...and we'll all be frustrated once again in trying to figure out what we should really eat.

To place bananas and many vegetables on the new "list of things to totally avoid" just tells me the new trend is far too extreme to survive the test of time.

Low carb to me takes some fun out of life. I like carbs.

But I do try to eat sensibly and actually consume less than I ever have of anything!!!

I don't agree with this low carb fad either. Carbohydrates are the body's preferred energy source. Depriving your body of it is not nutritionally sound. Balance, moderation and variation are the key components of a healthy diet (according to my professor, a licensed & registered nutritionist).

"Ain't it the TRUTH?" I mean, MY GOD, EVERYWHERE you TURN these days.......and NOW, they have a LOW CARB One a Day vitiman, GIMME A BREAK!

Mrschad, you hit the nail DEAD STRAIGHT on the HEAD, we NEED carbs BUT....as with anything, IN MODERATION!.

Ya know what REALLY makes me sick? Here we are, the FATTEST nation in the WORLD, literally and over 50% of this nations population is on SOME SORT of a DIET, while the rest of the world, well, most 3rd world countries, are STARVING to DEATH and here we are WORRYING about carbs *scratches his head*.......it DON'T make no sense to me!

Ditto on the carb vitamins! What will they think of next? I thought the no crust pizza's were nuts.....

It really comes down to several areas - good diet, smaller portions, exercise and moderation. You can have a piece of chocolate cake, just not everyday! You can have ice cream, but again not everyday.

I like eating out at buffet type restaurants. For the variety - I like lots of vegetables. And have to have my roast chicken. But honestly, and I almost hate to say this, smorgasboard/buffet type places seem to attract some very overweight people at times. As I'm sitting there eating my one plate with main foods, after a regular sized salad, they're chowing down on their second heaping plate of main foods/entree's. I try not to look, but I want to say what you're eating is fine, it's how much you're eating that may be the problem.

Please don't think terrible of me for saying this. Honest, I try not to judge. But this is one type restaurant where you really see it - the overeating.

Stock tip: Invest in Krispy Kreme right now. Their stock has dropped since the low carb fad took over and stocks are a good buy right now. When the fad is over, Krispy Kreme's stock will rise again.

Amen!!! I am so sick of the craze as well!!! :D It is very unhealthy to not eat your carbs. You are missing out on a lot of nutrients that your breads and pastas provide for you.

I do think we as a society eat too many carbs, but you should lower -- not nearly eliminate -- your carb intake. I think some things with low carbs are fine, like a new low carb soda they are coming out with, or a low carb bread. However, if I want ice cream GOSHDANGIT, I want it to be the real thing! ;)

My sister was on a low carb diet right after she had her daughter. The diet works and she looks great.

Skywatch, the carbonated drinks are something different. That refers to carbon dioxide dissolved in the drink, which gives it the fizz. That comes out by the time you drink it, hence the burp, and does not contribute to the calories.

Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are the preferred source of energy because they are digested quickly, and readily turn into glucose in the blood stream, which is the body's fuel. Any athlete knows about the "bonk." After about an hour or so, the body runs out of glucose in the blood and in storage in the liver and the muscles. When the body switches over to burning fat, the output is greatly reduced.

Cutting carbs is an effective way to lose weight, because so many people overdo them. Sugar should be the first to go. When I cut out the pastry, pop tarts, handfulls of sweetened cereals, etc, my weight drops like a rock. That's an Atkins principle. You still need the bread, pasta, bananas, etc. They contain necessary vitamins, minerals, often fiber.

I'm going to go get a glass of low carb water.

The issue is not that it doesn't work, but that the long term effects are unknown. I am willing to bet that it will lead to heart problems for those who remain on it for a long period of time.

low carb

#18 Postby sunnyday » Tue May 25, 2004 8:48 pm

I recently heard that some doctors are saying that they are afraid of the long-term effects. Sometimes, looking good doesn't mean being healthy. I think any extreme diet can be dangerous.

I drive around and fill vending machines for a living; beverages and candy. Just yesterday we got a flier from one of our suppliers announcing Hershey's new candy bar, called "1 carb".

That, and now Deli Express is coming out with low carb microwavable gut bomb sandwiches. Where will this end?
