New and need help!

#1 Postby Rieyeuxs » Tue May 18, 2004 11:52 pm

Hi Everybody! As a dedicated lurker, I've been monitoring this board since a month before Isabelle last year. I feel like I know most of you already! :) I broke down and actually decided to post now that the season is getting started possible early this year.
As a newbie, relatively speaking, is there a list/site of common abbreviations somewhere that I'm overlooking? I hate to sound stupid to the experts, and reading all the posts for the last several months, I've picked up on some. However, I'd like to learn and talk intelligently about the tropics someday.

So dumb question number one: What does LLC stand for? I'm guestimating a type of low, but what I have no idea... *sigh*

LLC = Low Level Circulation (i believe the C stands for circulation anyway)
You'll also see LLCC - Low Level Cloud Centre

In addition, feel free to simply ask questions if you don't know. Trust me, there are probably many others that have the same question, so just ask. The normal attitude on this board is not to flame people for their questions, but to help everyone learn. Anyway, welcome aboard and I look for to seeing you around this season!

I've assembled a quick list of abbreviations that get thrown around here quite a bit. This is not meant to be all inclusive, and I didn't provide detailed definitions...but here you go...

AFD Area Forecast Discussion
COL Cut Off Low
ENSO El Nino, Southern Oscillation
ITCZ Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone
LLC Low Level Circulation (not the same as a SURFACE circulation, however)
MCC Mesoscale Convective Complex
MJO Madden-Julian Oscillation
MLC Mid-Level Circulation
NAO North Atlantic Oscillation
PDO Pacific Dedical Oscillation
SPC Storm Prediction Center
T-Number Dvorak Intensity Number
TPC Tropical Prediction Center
TUTT Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough
TWO Tropical Weather Outlook
ULL Upper Level Low
QBO Quasi-Biennial Oscillation

Also, I couldn't resist throwing in a few other abbreviations that have nothing to do with the tropics:

ABC Already Been Chewed
BFD No Big Deal
BFE Far Away
WTMI Way Too Much Information

Welcome, Rieyeuxs!

Ditto what others have said about asking questions. I'm still very much an amateur in regards to weather knowledge and forecasting. Mostly, I came to Storm2K as a concerned hurricane-watching newbie to the Hou/Galv area and to the coast (lived far inland before coming here). I could tell early on that this is an informative and compassionate group. And I know that I can ask the smallest and, what might seem to me to be, most insignificant questions and they'll give clear, concise explanations without making a person feel ignorant or stupid.

Glad to see you starting to post more. Don't lurk so much!

Mike -- great list!
