It looks like the 1949 storm you mention made landfall in Palm beach as a Cat 3 then cut across Florida missing Tampa Bay, but turning sharpley north around Pasco County. To me it doesn't look likely that it " Took The Water Out Of
Tampa Bay For Six Hours" sounds exagerated. But it does look like it maintained Cat 1 strength through Central Florida which is interesteing.

Also while looking for information on this storm, I found an incredible site for looking at Historical Hurricane Tracks. I was not aware of this site, but it is really detailed!
