Dixie chicks still in hot water!!!
DALLAS, March 17 - There are a lot worse things in country music than your wife leaving you or your dog dying. There stations not playing your music because you done gone and said some things against the president. Music superstars the Dixie Chicks are finding out that criticizing President Bush plans for war in Iraq can cost you air play, big time.

Just to let you all know...the media has blown this STORY WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. As of last night, only 7 stations had yanked the Chicks from their playlist... there had only been a total of 12, but after reconsidering... now only 7 remain.

Well to tell you what they said makes an impact - my 7 year old daughter heard the discussion on the radio about what the Chicks had done and she told me - she didn't want to listen to them anymore and she was an avid fan. Chas said what they did is wrong. Coming from a 7 year old - I was impressed.
AZSNOWMAN - I don't have any CD's but when they come on any radio station we are listening to - the channel gets switched.

**Just a clarification...**
What I meant by being blown out of proportion was not what they said, but to what the reaction has been!

Garrett, I disagree. A lot of their fans are really MAD!!! And those fans are the ones that make them successful. Read my post "Speaking of The Dixie Chicks....Fans Speak Out!"
I'm sorry because I know what they said doesn't really bother you that much, but I, like many many others find it disgraceful.
Hang in there...they're gonna need your support.

No Southerngale...I didn't see it didn't bother me. I think it was wrong for Natalie to criticize, especially overseas. Where I find the problem is that their music is suffering! I will continue to listen to the Dixie Chicks.
Here is another case-in-point! I paid 48.00 last night to go see Toby Keith and I don't have the same political views as he does, even though he spewed it out in full force last night! I respected his right to speak.
The music shouldn't suffer.

As far as what the reaction has been, I should have clarified further. I meant radio station reaction. Only a few have yanked the Chicks!!
Plus...and I know you will agree with this... protestors always get more press than supporters... case in point with the war protests...much more coverage of them than the pro-war rallies... why? Because it is more interesting. While there are A LOT of angry Chicks fans, I think that the media's portrayal that all the US is mad at Natalie and are burning their cd's and all the radio stations have quit playing them is a bunch of Bull.

I don't have to agree with someone politically to enjoy their music either.
I'd be willing to bet that what Toby Keith said last night wasn't insulting or disgraceful though, was it? That's the difference. I'm sure he was cheered by what he said.
What kind of reaction do you think Natalie would have received if she had said that at a concert here in America? or better yet, in Texas?
I hope you can see the difference here.

Rainband...it goes beyond that. Of course they are entitled to their opinion but what they said was disgraceful to our country. That's a different story in my eyes, and clearly many others.
This is what they said:
"Just so you know," says singer Natalie Maines, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
In a follow-up quote from The Dixie Chicks, Maines was quoted as saying: "We've been overseas for several weeks and have been reading and following the news accounts of our governments' position. The anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."
Maines further stated, "I feel the President is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

In a way I do. What Natalie said wasn't good at all. But if you disagree with Toby, in the cocky demeening way he presents his statements could infuriate someone as well. For example, calling anti-war protestors SOB's. Yes, he said that last night! I didn't agree, but I am not going to burn his cd's because of it...and what he said is degrading, rude, and disrespectful as well. It is just because what he said was popular and in the majority... he won't receive criticism.
And I don't think his music should suffer either... do you see what I mean??

If you want to see something interesting go to http://www.dixiechicks.com and read their public message board. It's getting flooded with protest posts from their fans. It's the fans that will ultimately decide on how much damage that was done by Natalie's mouth.

I see what you mean but saying what is popular and in the majority clearly does matter.
The fans are what make these performers successful or not, so if they're going to say something that stupid, then they have to face the consequences. Of course their music is still good, but their fans are livid!! They don't want anything to do with them, at least for now.
You have to admit that what they said was totally uncalled for. If they truly feel that way, of course they have the "right" to say it, but that was one time they should have kept their mouth shut. It would have been in their best interest. So then you have these fans, many of whom are Texans and proud of it, and proud of Bush and the fact that he's from Texas and they hear The Dixie Chicks comment. Reaction??? You betcha!!! Their hearts go to their home state, their country, their president, not Dixie Chicks singers.

I have said that Southerngale...over and over again. Natalie has said something that she shouldn't. I think like many of you have said...we have to wait and see what happens with the fans.
