What exactly is the prediction?

The prediction is for a magnitude 6.4 or greater earthquake to occur between January 5 and September 5, 2004, within a 12,440 sq. miles area of southern California that includes portions of the eastern Mojave Desert, Coachella Valley, Imperial Valley (San Bernardino, Riverside and Imperial Counties) and eastern San Diego County.

What happens if a major earthquake occurs where a major wildfire is? What happens if the fire were to cascade down into the earth, where the quake has opened up?

the ground doesn't open up big time during earthquakes though there may be local cracking and slumping. However, wildfires would be the last concern in a big shock since earthquakes are invariably followed by major fires of their own. Prime examples being San Francisco in 1906 and Tokyo in 1923. Both cities were severely shaken and then levelled by the subsequent conflagrations.

Wow...crazy....thanks for the answer...I asked my husband the same q last night and he laughed at me, saying the earth doesn't open up, like you said...guess I've seen too much "Hollywood" :O)
