Most Dangerous States 2004

Can you go to sleep with the front door unlocked? Better check this chart first. Also, see if things have gotten better or worse in your state since last year.

Determining the Safest and Most Dangerous State Rankings

1. Crime rates per 100,000 in murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft are individually applied to a formula and compared to the national average.
2. The category results are added to give each state a composite score.

3. The composite scores are ranked from highest to lowest to determine the safest and most dangerous states. The farther below the national average, the safer a state ranks (and vice versa) on the final list.

Note: Crime figures are for the most recent year for which final FBI numbers are available.

YIKES! Bama is up to 18th from 20th. I guess I'll think twice before leaving the doors unlocked again....and Mississippi is higher on the list.... :roll:

Well, I live in the 9th safest, 4th healtiest and 4th most liveable state according to that site so I guess I should be happy to be Iowan! :)

I am SHOCKED that NJ is only #33 on that list - good news but we do have really bad cities in our state, Atlantic City, Camden, Newark, Trenton, Elizabeth.

Louisiana is actually number 1. I am surprised that MS is so high ranked. I knew though once those casinos made their way here they would bring the crime with it.

Pascagoula is a small town and is now crowded. Too many cars on these small roads.

That's why I'm surprised about NJ Lindaloo - we have 12 casinos in Atlantic City.

Am I reading it wrong? Louisiana was #1 in 2003 & #2 in 2004.

Wow, I'm completely shocked that FL is #7 for crime. Our health and livability factor are quite low. Hmm, what am I doing in FL then, lol? I NEVER leave my doors unlocked, even when I'm home. Drives Chad nuts, but hey, safety first. Now I have the stats to support my door locking obsession, lol.

I am not surprised at Missouri rankings. The majority, however, comes from KC and St. Louis. Meth labs, however... :roll:

Don't forget that there's major local differences. There's a big difference between the township I live in and the city 1 mile away. I wouldn't live my life based on a statewide rating.
