This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Met from Brazil: System NOT a Hurricane

#1 Postby MWatkins » Sat Mar 27, 2004 3:59 pm

I am not sure what to make of this article, but it's pretty clear that people in Brazil don't think much of this system:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/03/27/b ... index.html

Let's see...it's pretty evident from satellite imagery that:

1. This is a vertically flipped system with low pressure at the SURFACE and anti-cyclonic outflow aloft.

2. That's an eye...although not as clear as yesterday.

SST's down there are barely in the minumum known range for a tropical cyclone...

http://weather.unisys.com/surface/sst.html

...and perhaps there is not as much energy translating to the surface...but unless the Brazillian definition of an extra-tropical is different than ours...and actually means Tropical cyclone...then the comment "there is no need to alert the public" is a load of cr*p (word edited for fear of reprisal from the FCC).

Yes the media at Rio are saying that it is not a hurricane but a cyclone and are downplaying the effects that will go to that area. However they are telling the people to stay at their homes and the fisherman to not venture out to sea.

Then NHC should cease giving them any help since those wannabees think they know more than those who are trained

Not a hurricane, my @$$ ...

Let's see, as MWatkins explained ... SFC circ. with upper ridging aloft venting the cyclone, a distinct eye for at least the past 36 hours now ... and the outflow is very impressive to say the least, which has surely enhanced in the development of the cyclone ... the conditions (aside from the marginal SST's) were absolutely perfect for this hurricane to gel ...

QuikSCAT isn't impressive, however, there's ample QPF contamination and it's not a dead-on pass (funny seeing barbs in the "wrong" direction).

WVL doesn't indicate this to be a "gale center" (extra-tropical cyclone)storm which blows out part of the Brazilian's implied comments.

Also, fun seeing all the TC folks pop back for this event...kinda like Ana and is a pre-season party!

1. Yeah...it's good to see the regulars out this early. Kind of like a pre-season football game. It's Ok to watch for a while but dosn't really count.

2. My left and right sides of my brain always squabble when I look at a sat or OScat image south of the equator. It's kind of like asking what color is this word:

BLUE

When it's RED.
