Brazil News: Population in a state of alert in Tubarão

#1 Postby Hyperstorm » Sat Mar 27, 2004 9:38 am

Tubarão - The fast approach of an extratropical cyclone had many people in a state of alert on Friday afternoon. A satellite photo showed that the phenomenon is approaching southern Santa Catarina. Some had even divulged that it would be a hurricane of great proportions and would cause great damage in some cities, even with floods. However, a few hours later, some meteorologists saw that in reality it was not a hurricane.

The main television stations of the country notified that the cyclone is not of great proportions.

Meteorologist Ronaldo Coutinho, one of the most appraised of the southern parts of the country, gave its opinion with relation to the photo of the satellite. "I talked with international meteorologists and they had affirmed that it was a hurricane. It is not a cyclone, it is a hurricane, classified Category 1, with winds in its interior that can reach 160 kilometers per hour".

The Body of Firemen received innumerable phone calls from people requesting information to the measure that the news spread all over the city.

The Civil Defense of Florianópolis confirmed the presence of a cyclone in the ocean, that until the closing of this edition, was still stationary. The winds of this cyclone can reach 120 kilometers per hour.

The advice is for people to stay in their homes and do not leave in case of winds, stay away from trees and refrain from driving.

It is very sad that these people in Brazil (especially meteorologists) have mixed thinkings about this situation. This is a very serious situation here and no one, except only one meteorologist, has the right information.

Just look at how it's called "extratropical cyclone" at the beginning of the story, even though the meteorologist tries to persuade otherwise. Look also, how they start by saying that it's fast approaching and then they say it is still stationary. What's wrong with these people?

And not only that, this is unbelievable, that same newspaper has the forecast for this weekend for sunny skies with a few clouds. WOW! This reminds me of the earlier years in the US when people weren't prepared to take action in the event of a hurricane.

I don't know about you all, but this smells like disaster, especially since the hurricane appears to be strengthening. I ask for God to illuminate those people!

Hyperstorm, you are completely right. It is a hurricane! They should prepare, considering it probably is strengthening.
