A category one cyclone (on the Australian scale. Since Evan is only 35 mph, this would equal what we call a tropical depression) has been declared for waters east of the Northern Territory of Australia.
Tropical Cyclone Evan is situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 120 kilometers east of Alyangula.
A cyclone warning is current for coastal and island communities between Cape Shield and Port Roper, including Groote Eylandt.
The warning between Elcho Island and Cape Shield has been cancelled.
The cyclone is moving west-south-west at 20 kilometers an hour and is expected to approach the coast near Numbulwar about midnight.
Gales with gusts up to 110 kilometers an hour are likely to develop on the coast in the next few hours.
Heavy rain may cause flooding over the eastern Top End tonight.
