NOAA Weather Radio Broadcasts

Besides the NOAA Weather radio coverage in your area, were there any cities that you pick up from time to time?

Sometimes whenever I flip from Dallas (KEC56: 162.400MHz) to Ft. Worth (KEC55: 162.550 MHz), I would get coverage from Waco (WXK35 162.475), Tyler-Longview (WXK36 162.475), Sherman-Denison (WXK22 162.475), Corsicana (KXI67 162.525), and rarely Lubbock (WXJ79 162.400).

Last July, I woke up early in the morning, just before sunrise, and turned teh weather radio on.

I am not a huge tech, but I know sometimes VHF/FM signals can travel longer distances if there is a warm mid-layer inversion.

I was listening to my NWR station in Omaha, and it appeared weaker than normal. I flipped around the seven frequnecies, and picked up Concordia and Topeka, KS; Sioux City; IA, Lincoln, NE; and St. Joseph and Kansas City, MO NWRs. The signal was actually comparable to my Omaha station at times. In fact, if I turned my wx radio a certain angle, I would pick up a distance station better on the Omaha frequency.

Strange stuff.

Once, when I had one of those older TV/FM/AM weather radios, I picked up a doctor's pager at one of the area medical centers around here. "Soap dispenser empty in ...blah...blah".

I am literally at a "tri-county," which happens to be at an intersection of three National Weather Service offices.

So, I am able to recieve three NOAA Weather Radio stations at any given time. They are Ruskin [Tampa Bay Area] (Inverness, FL - WWF-38: 162.400), Melbourne, FL (Orlando, FL - KIH-63: 162.475), Jacksonville, FL (Ocala, FL - WWF-85: 162.525).

I occasionally pick up a different station for one of the broadcast areas, but generally all three of the closest transmitters come in very good.

It is enjoyable to hear all three forecasts for an immediate area. NWS coverage areas have to have a line somewhere.

One time, I picked up a signal from Richland Springs, Texas (WWG-94 162.525 MHz).

162.400 {Springfield Area - SGF NWS}
162.425 {Joplin Area - SGF NWS}
162.450 {Grove Area - TULSA NWS}
162.475 {Fayetteville Area - TULSA NWS}
162.500 none
162.525 none
162.550 {Branson Area - SGF NWS}

Occasionally I can pick up:

162.400 {Chanute Area - ICT NWS}
162.475 {El Dorado Springs Area - SGF NWS}
162.500 {Clinton Area - EAX NWS}

I remember back in the summer of 1999, I picked up a broadcast on 162.500 MHz from a Dallas Stars Celebration after they've won the Stanley Cup.

When I lived in southeastern Massachusetts (about 30 miles south of Boston and about 30 miles east of Providence, I picked up Taunton/Boston,
MA station, KHB-35 162.475... the National Weather Service office moved from Boston to Taunton [10 miles west of were I lived] in the 1990's.

I was able to pick up the next closet NWS office (which wasn't too close) from NJ or NY... I believe it was Atlantic City, NJ (KHB-38 162.400).

On occasion, I can pick up the Hastings, NE channel, but not too often.

Olny NWSFO PHI(Not surprising, considering the transmitter tower is less than 5 miles away) and sometimes NWSFO AKQ(Wakefield VA)
