April 6, 1982 -
the "Great Blizzard of April '82" struck New England, New York and Pennsylvania and dumped 1 to 2 feet of snow. Many places had their greatest April snowstorm ever. Winds frequently gusted to 70 and 80 mph. There was an exceptionally high frequency of simultaneous thunderstorms and heavy snow with numerous lightning strikes reported. Record cold poured in the wake of the storm and many spots were 25 degrees colder than normal the day after the storm.

That was a great storm. NYC saw 9.6" and temperatures fell well into the 20s. April 6-8 saw record lows in NYC (21°, 21°, and 25°) and Boston saw the mercury shiver at 16° on April 7, the latest the temperature has ever fallen into the teens there.

Boston made it down to 11°F on the morning of Tuesday, April 5th, 1874, this was the all time record for the month (of April).

I remember we had a late season Arctic outbreak which that storm followed on the heels of. Thundersnow, gale force winds, 1-3 inch per hr. snowfall rates, quite a storm indeed! We received 20 inches and funny thing about that winter (1981-82) we had more snow outside of the winter season then during it. 15inches on Dec 6-7 1981 and the 20 inches April 6-7 1982. Could this winter be a repeat LOL

My area received 6 inches of snow on April 6, 1982. And it was not a really wet snow either. I remember sledding in the street during the afternoon, which would normally not be possible with a wet snow.

I was thinking the same thing about the 81-82 season. Only difference is the Dec two day events were not cold enough along the coast for heavy snow and got mostly rain. The Poconos where I was staying had 8" and 6" from the two storms. That snow stayed on the ground until late March. I was skiing April 8th in light snow.

1981-82 is a good analog but don't expect a one in every 200 years event to happen again in my lifetime at least. Remember last year we got a good storm in April with up to 7" of snow. I don't expect to see that again either.

I was a sophomore at Rutgers (New Brunswick, J) in '82 and remember that storm well, as I went to bed to mixed precip and woke up to about 10" of heavy wet snow on the ground. Classes were cancelled and massive snowball fights ensued. A great day. And last year's 8" snowfall in Metuchen on 4/7 (?) was also great - my son and I build a "summer snowman" outfitted with a beach umbrella, Hawaiian shirt, and baseball cap and bat.
