I'm a sensitive guy to all the great things that our police and firefighters do for us. Two of my lifelong friends are the sheriff in my home county and the deputy police chief in that city. My time as coordinator of our regional disaster preparedness team and as chairman of the public safety committee helped me gain that respect. Before I left for Arizona, I had a common backyard with the fire chief!
But just as certain...these people use humor to help offset the stress they go through.
One instance in particular, the sheriff was called out to a local park to investigate a complaint about sexual activity there. Upon his arrival, he discovered a prominent businessman in town was indeed engaged in some extracurricular activity with another young male. There were some other men there, too.
"He asked me not to tell his wife," he once told me. "Knowing him for many years, I told him I would not."
A man of character, he didn't.
Within a few days a story appeared in the local paper about several local men involved in some illicit activity in that park. Their names were listed and they were charged with something like "trespassing in that park after it was closed."
Later, more serious charges came about.
I doubt the sheriff got his vote in the next election.

Here is a joke you all might enjoy:
One night a police officer was staking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible DUI violations. At closing time, he saw a fellow tumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and try his keys in five different cars before he found his. Then he sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. Everyone else left the bar and drove off. Finally he started his engine and began to pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered the Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be.The driver replied, "Tonight I'm the designated decoy.".
