.A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL ENTER THE REGION SATURDAY NIGHT AND
LINGER INTO EARLY MONDAY. THIS STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR VERY HEAVY
SNOW WITH BLOWING AND DRIFTING. SNOW TOTALS OF 9 TO 13 INCHES ARE
POSSIBLE FROM COUNCIL GROVE TO HIAWATHA. LESSER AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 8
INCHES ARE POSSIBLE NORTHWEST OF THIS LINE TO THE NEBRASKA BORDER
NORTH OF BELLEVILLE...AND ALSO ALONG A LINE FROM EMPORIA TO LAWRENCE.
TO THE SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 35...FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WILL BE THE
HAZARD...WITH AT LEAST ONE HALF TO THREE QUARTERS INCH OF ICE
POSSIBLE BY LATE SUNDAY EVENING.

I posted about this this morning-man are they honking about this storm!! Some mets in KC see some body getting 18 inches from this storm!! I hope it verivies-but we've been burned sooooo many times that I am still skeptical-I see 4 possibilities (and I know that currently all guidence has us in good snow/frozen precip) 1. It verifies and our lack of snow ends!! 2. The precip stays in the form of sleet/fr. rain too long and our snow totals drop. 3. The track of the storm wobbles and people in Wichita rec. our 12 inches and we have drizzle 4. The storm looses its moisture all together and fizzles out. I'm going for number 2 for no other reason than this is what usually happens here (actually, for the past 10 years, 2-4 have happened quite often!!) Again, I still remeber in 1999-6 hours out they are calling for a blizzard-we got 2 inches of sleet!!! I hope this verivies-it really does look good for us right now-I'm just real gun shy-but boy, do we need the moisture!!! I can tell you one thing, I'll be boring everyone Saturday night thru Sunday with updates-if this gets going, I'll start a new Observ. thread. My fingers are crossed!!!

I live 90 miles due south of Kansas City. Last night we were in the zone for heavy snow (8-12). Today the NWS is saying a sever ice storm, maybe an inch of ice! I think they are scouring out the cold air way to fast. It was only 20 degrees here today and it has fallen to 14 this evening. Do any of you see the ice storm being further south into southwest and southcentral missouri?

I am by no means a met-actually a Latin teacher!!-but what seems to happen in this area so many times is that we get warm air aloft and that allows for the freezing rain-it will still be pretty cold at the surface-This is my main fear-I see many people in this area having a long period of freezing rain and sleet with the folks to our North getting the higher snow amounts due to most of it being snow-I do not have a part. odel to back this up and therefore could be wrong-I hope so!!-but that has happened to us quite a bit the past few years!! I Hope we all get dumped on!!!

I'm still a little gun shy, but this really looks good as of now-one concern-there is a low forming in the gulf and I wonder if this will take some mositure away??? I'm not trying to be gloomy-I'm so darned excited right now that I can't stand it-I just can't believe we may actually get the brunt of a storm!!! Sounds like a warm front is going to move just enough north of south, soutwestern and south-central Missouri.

I have experienced warm fronts rising temperatures 30 to 40 degrees in southeastern New England. Temperatures as cold as the teens during the evening have warmed up into the mid 40's (in just 8 to 12 hours) the next morning changing several hours of snow, rapidly into mix and then a cold to not so cold "40 degree rain."

At the end of my last snow event, I saw sleet at 10°F due to WAA.. which you will likely experience as well. It's not the surface temps that matter with icing events, it's the air temps between 800 and 950mb really..

Well said.. during these winter storm events one should not only focus their attention to the surface conditions, but rather the lower levels of the atmosphere, usually 850mb and lower. The best tool to use is a Skew-T. This will help determine snow vs ice pellets vs freezing rain/drizzle.
