#1 Postby boca » Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:33 pm

Did anyone read about the pinnapple express type of weather pattern we are supposed to have in Feb for Florida? I read in the Sun Sentinel.

No. I didn't read that. Which day was that on? Also, with this Storm I wonder who will get the snow/ice with it or is it rain for them this time around. When I say them. I mean up North of course. Seems like a potent storm but I don't think will get the brunt of the rain as local mets are saying. Looks farther North to me. Can't wait till Hurricane Season....

'Pineapple Express' to take S. Florida on weather roller coaster in February

By Ken Kaye

South Florida has been on a weather roller coaster this winter, with warm days followed by cold ones -- like today. Now the ride gets more intense.

Between Friday and Sunday, the National Weather Service in Miami predicts up to 2 inches of rain, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Then, expect to see a wetter-than-normal February, which normally gets a total of 2 inches of rain.

"We're in kind of a volatile pattern, with changes happening quickly," meteorologist Jim Lushine said Wednesday. "This will be a wetter period than we've had for the past couple months."

With temperatures in the low 40s Thu morning, conditions should warm gradually, with an afternoon high Thu of 72 degrees and about 75 through the weekend. But next week, expect more rain and warm temperatures, followed by cold.

It's all because of the "Pineapple Express" and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, two potent climatic forces that create upheaval in the atmosphere, he said.

The Pineapple Express is a subtropical jet stream that starts in Hawaii and pumps moisture from the Pacific Ocean over the southern United States.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation is a pressure wave that, much like "the wave" in sports stadiums, circles the equator going west to east at about a 30-mph clip, making a revolution about once a month. It produces atmospheric instability.

When the two forces combine, they can produce severe weather, including thunderstorms, lightning and tornadoes, Lushine said.

"Through much of February, this pattern will give us more fronts and more moisture, too," he said. "We're getting into a time of year when we do get severe weather here in Florida."

Lushine said it shouldn't rain continuously throughout the weekend.

The forecast calls for showers to taper off by Sunday. In the past two months, about 1.3 inches of rain has fallen, or about 3 inches below normal, so the rain should be welcome, Lushine said.

But not everyone is looking forward to that.

Mark Whitney, general manager of Mangos Restaurant and Lounge on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, said rain discourages diners from sitting outside.

"The people enjoy sitting out on front on the patio, and whenever it doesn't rain, it's usually full out there," he said.

Lushine said since the start of winter, temperatures have averaged about 1 degree below normal, thanks to a parade of cold fronts.

He said it might seem considerably colder than most years because there have been more days with temperatures below normal than days warmer than normal.

"It's almost like we're in springtime up North, where you get some radical ups and downs and rains," he said.
