The prolonged spell of much below normal temperatures in New York City has led to the Hudson River becoming filled with ice floes. Were it not for the ice breakers, perhaps the River would be frozen solid.

Well Don, You asked.
I have always wanted to find out what it would be like to actually try to swim in a freezing cold river in winter (with plenty of paramedics watching me at all times LOL).
There was a plane crash or something like that, in January in 1981 in Washington DC, Flight 90 I think..........that I found very, very intriguing because folks were in the freezing cold river or whatever cold body of water in a snowstorm in winter and I was very, very fascinated by the scene.
If I got to try this out, I'd like to try wading in a freezing cold river, with ice in it, during a major snowstorm, and with a stereo system blasting Billy Joel's "Allentown" and many of his other most excellent songs!!
That would be an interesting winter experience!!!

Jeb,
The plane crashed into the Potomac River in 1982. Unfortunately, one passenger who helped rescue several others died of hypothermia. When polar bear swimming (yes, I've done it along with the Bain de Neige at Quebec City's Carnival de Quebec), one has to be alert for the risk of hypothermia especially when the water temperature is warmer and feels warmer than the air temperature. Complacency is very dangerous.

Oh how i remember that day well. Had a metro rail accident as well that same very day but didnt get much attention because of the plane. The potomac pretty much looked like the Hudson there in those photos. I lived in the area at the time. Plane had a build up of ice on the wings which is why it crashed.
