Storm for Lawrence

#1 Postby sertorius » Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:33 pm

Well, I just thought I'd give a brief update on Lawrence: storm is winding down here so it seems-we have had some pretty good snow squalls the past 3-4 hours-put down about 1-1.5 inches of snow with very strong gusty North winds-had enough to go out and play snow football with my 4 year old son this evening-man it was awsome!!! He loves the snow!! Congrads to Omaha and points North and West of here-you guys hit the brunt of this storm-the GFS actually did pretty good for us here-well at least I got to see some snow and play in it for a while-won't last long-going into the 50's by Thursday (but, I wonder if the models take into account the snow pack North of us-any cold front should be a bit stronger!!) and that will last till prob. Sunday or so. GFS once again has us getting cold, but it has pushed it back till Tuesday-was this Thursday, then Sunday, now Tuesday-local mets in KC have kind of given up on it!! Sorry so long, but I wanted to give you last update for us here-I'll talk with you when ever we have any more threats of weather which looks to be a while-be careful everyone getting bad weather-esp. in the Carolinas-and those North, enjoy the snow!!! Thanks for listening to me flap the past week!! At 7:35, still snowing with blowing snow!! Have a great night!!

Well, the storm is winding down, but the radar is showing a few heavier bands developing w/in the snow shield-may actually snow here for a couple more hours!!! It will not be heavy 2-3 inches at the most, but hey as snow starved as we are, I'll take it!! It is a great winter's night here!! Also, NWS AFD has decided to keep things a bit colder this week and in a sense junk the gfs-think the snow pack will help strengthen the cold fronts!! Stay safe out there-especially people East of here and North-don't take any chances as this is a very dangerous storm for many people!!

Hello everybody-final report for this storm in Lawrence. We picked up about 2 inches of snow with really strong winds-wind chills are running about minus 5-10 at times here this morning!! We are so snow starved and winter starved that this was enough to cancel schools here in Lawrence and my school in Kansas City-all schools are closed in Kansas City due to the cold!! Great little storm for us-not compared to what they got about 200 miles North or what you have in the East, but for an area that has been pretty much winter free for 2 years, this is big enough!! Also, forcast trending colder for this week compared to yesterday and two days ago-no 40's or 50's and models seem to bring another pretty good shot of cold air and maybe snow to the area this weekend and early next week!! We shall see-temp. now is 5 degrees with a stiff North wind-off to play some snow football and do some sledding today with my 4 year old-just what winter is supposed to be about!! Have a great day!!!

Crazy forecasting going on here now!! Last Friday they were calling for a big arctic hit for here Wednesday or Thursday-then, on Saturday, the Gfs and Euro began to show warmth for that time frame-so on Sunday and Monday, they were saying temps. in the upper 40's Thursday and around 40 for tomorrow-This morning, they were still calling for a high of 38 for tomorrow but were beginning to hint at colder weather (one met in Topeka called for cold on Thursday-the only one including all the mets in KC) now, the NWS has our high at 12 tomorrow!! The arctic front has cleared the Dakotas and is on its way down!! Now they don't think it will get above freezing for about 5-6 days here!! Amazing stuff if you follow all the different forecasts-NWS even stated that the models, all of them, have a had a terrible run the past week!! Well, guess I'll put another log on the fire and hope we can have another snow with all this cold air around-if this verifys tomorrow (and with all the snow pack to our North and even a little here it should) it will be the coldest air mass we have had in almost 3 years!!! Have a great night!!

To be honest David, my totals may be too much-we did have a little heavier band move through last night-(it was blue on the radar) and KC got about 2 inches-The roads here this morning were pretty icy and snowy since nobody was calling for the snow and they weren't treated-we prob. should of had school, but I would have cancelled it due to the wind chills!! Prob. be worse tomorrow if this arctic front really does move through-may get some more snow this weekend! Hey man, sometime this dry spell will break and we will get a dump-this drought situation is still hampering us but eventually it will break!! Can we keep the streak alive tomorrow night??? I think this is the year it ends-K-State is alot better and we just go into such funks!! We'll see!!
