Hello. I love snow.
First time poster - found this board referenced today on the NE weather site. I find that one very interesting, but annoying, in that the only way I've been able to use it is via a google newsgroup viewer and the posts are delayed 3-9 hours, so I don't feel like it's real time. This looks to be a good board with decent traffic. Been searching off and on for awhile for a good winter weather message board and never found much other than a board last year that looked very similar to this (might have been called liveweather-something, but I don't recall, as it's been awhile), but disappeared many months ago. It also wasn't nearly as active as this.
So, on to the snow. One question. I live in Middlesex County, NJ (Metuchen) and was wondering if anyone has any idea why the Philly office has WSWarnings up for south Jersey, but only WWadvisories up for central and northern NJ, yet when you click on the various counties, the estimated snows are 3-6" for all of them? For example, the WSW says: "A WINTER STORM WARNING IS NORMALLY ISSUED FOR THIS AREA WHEN SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF FOUR INCHES OR MORE ARE EXPECTED," while the WWA says, "A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NORMALLY ISSUED FOR THIS AREA WHEN SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF THREE TO SIX INCHES ARE EXPECTED." Maybe I'm dense, but I don't see much difference in those statements. Regardless, I'm just happy we're going to get some snow and some unusually cold temperatures, so we'll get the really low bulk density snow we rarely get in these parts.
See ya.

Actually , Philadelphia county and Delaware county in PA, as well as most of the counties in Southern NJ, have a WS Warning criteria of 4" or more. North of these areas, the criteria for a WS Warning is 6" or more. That is why 3 to 6 inches of snow results in a WS Warning for some parts of the area, but only a WW Advisory for others.

Thanks.
Had no idea the criteria were different - guess it's relative to the amount of snow the area typically gets - the more you usually get, the higher the amount needs to be to warrant a warning? Interesting.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Right now it's been snowing lightly here for about 2 hours and we have about 1/2" of beautifully light and fluffy powder on the ground and hopefully at least another 4-5" to come.
Jeb - if you want snow from me, it's gonna be more than 60 miles - you're about 150 miles SW of me...
Anyone care to answer a few questions? How long has this board been in existence (looks like most folks have only been around since early 2003, at most)? Anyone know of an easier way to view the ne.weather site, as I like the site, but hate the delay? http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&l ... ne.weather
Anyone know why I've been given the "freezing drizzle" moniker? Seems like some random descriptor. Anyone know how much more snow we'll get this winter? :>)

Thanks for the info. As of 11:30 pm, we have 2.5" of the lightest, fluffiest snow I recall in these parts. It's really pretty - very sparkly - I assume this type of snow is more highly crystalline than higher moisture content snow. Coming down at a pretty good clip and many hours to go, so I think we're going to be on the high side of the 3-6" predictions, maybe even in excess of 6", given some of the reports to our west. That would be awesome.

As of 9:00 am, we have 5.5" of snow in Metuchen and it's still snowing, although probably not for long, given the radar. The NWS raised Winter Storm Warnings recently, although it's obviously a little late for that, as the storm is almost over. All in all, a great modest storm with the fluffiest snow I've ever seen around here - like Rocky Mountain powder.

Thanks Stephanie. Hey, I grew up in Washington Twp, right next door to Glassboro - used to go to the Glass Bowl growing up, as it was the closest bowling alley. Seems like half my HS went to Glassboro State (will never be Rowan to me) - I wanted to go away for college though and spent 9 great years at Rutgers (undergrad and grad - no Blutarsky here). I also remember feeling ripped off so many times growning up, when we'd get the changeover to rain, while the N/W suburbs of Philly were getting hammered with snow. And now I live in the meteorological equivalent of those suburbs - we tend to get a bit more snow on average than Philly in northern Middlesex County - very close to NYC amounts, usually.
