Reinforcing Cold Spills Into East

Reinforcing Cold Spills Into East
10AM EST, January 9, 2004

The cold air mass in the east was
proving resilient as fresh arctic air
surges south from Canada once again.
A storm moving off the southeast coast
and a new arctic high pressure area
over Ontario were helping to funnel cold
northerly winds across the east.
As was the case on Thursday morning,
the coldest temperatures were found in
an arc from the upper peninsula of
Michigan into upstate New York and
New England.

A WeatherBug live sensor in Madison,
NY east of Syracuse recorded a bonechilling
16 degrees while below zero
readings were common just north and
west of Boston.

Afternoon high temperatures will stay in
the single digits and teens from New
England and New York into the
northern Great Lakes and Minnesota.
Tonight will see bitterly cold wind chills
especially in New England and across
southeast New York where winds of 10
to 20 mph will persist. Wind chill
advisories have been issued for these
areas with wind chills of -15 to -40
expected.

Further south a minor wintry
precipitation event was the story across
parts of the southeast and southern
Appalachians. Accumulations of 1 to 2
inches were recorded across parts of
southern Virginia and central and
western North Carolina and into eastern
Tennessee while a few isolated spots
near Nashville got up to 5 inches.
Some light icing occurred in the higher
elevations of northern Alabama, north
Georgia and western South Carolin.
Winter weather advisories remain in
effect for parts of the Georgia,
Tennessee, Kentucky, the Carolinas
and Virginia. The precipitation is
expected to move off the coast by
Friday evening.

A warmup will spread into the Plains
and Mississippi Valley on Saturday and
briefly reach the east coast on Sunday
before much colder air returns from the
northwest late Monday into Tuesday.
As hard as it is to imagine, this new
cold air mass may be even more bitter
for the northeast and Great Lakes than
the one currently in place. However
there are no signs of any major winter
storms in the east or Plains in the next
week or so.

Yes, some very cold air has come back. Temps have dropped from 25 degrees at 5 AM to 20 degrees at 11 AM. And tomorrow my area is supposed to have a high of 18 followed by an overnight low near 3 degrees. Wow! 8-)
