Jeb's Woodbridge Storm Thread

#1 Postby Anonymous » Thu Jan 08, 2004 2:20 pm

Everyone is invited to chime in on this thread :)

Yesterday, our high was 31 degrees with a dewpoint of 6 degrees.

Last night we dipped to 14 degrees with a dewpoint of 11 degrees.

Today we are still in the upper 20s to low 30s.

The ground is frozen; surface frigidization is evident. Any snow that reaches the ground will stick, from flake 1.

This morning we saw cirrus clouds which quickly thickened to a cirrostratus overcast by 11am. As of 12:30pm, we had altostratus bands move in under the high ice deck. The clouds are moving in from our WSW.

At the moment we are looking at two cloud decks overhead: The cirrostratus layer, and areas or bands of altostratus under the high ice deck.

Temperatures are holding steady at 30 degrees. The dewpoint is 6 degrees.

Late tonight and tomorrow there is a chance of some very light snow.

The ground is very cold; any snow that reaches the ground will stick and create slick spots on roads here.

Please see this regional radar for the Mid Atlantic. There is moisture in our vicinity, but I suspect a good deal of it is virga. Virga is precipitation (rain, sleet, or snow) that is falling from the clouds but that is evaporating before it reaches the ground. This area of moisture is translating northeastward with time.

Please see this national radar. There is an expanding area of moisture near the GOM. This system will have to be monitored as it interacts with the colder air. Look out N Georgia, SC and possibly NC into tonight. The track of this system will determine who gets what kind of precip, and how much. People in N VA shouldn't be too overly concerned with it.

We'll see some flurries.

It's farther south where there will be more moisture available to interact with the cold arctic air and its associated very low dewpoints.

Jeb...enjoy your optimistic posts :D

Don't expect too much here in NW Va from this one...very light snow, at best and no dark snow :D

I too am hoping for a big coastal storm, they are the ones coming from the South taping Gulf moisture and bombing off East Coast that bring the big snows for us.

It's a darn shame about your low dewpoint, A.B.Jeb, or you may have had a shot at some of that reaching the ground. :(

Jeb, radar looks a lot better, but it is still virga, so far. I am now leaving Alexandria and headed to Fredericksburg. I will report in later with temps and precip info.

Its 446 pm. We have a solid altostratus overcast. There are darker clouds to the south, moving our way.

Last night we hit 14 degrees.

Today's high temperature was 34 degrees.

It's currently 33 degrees, with a dewpoint of 6 degrees.

Winds are light WSW.

The clouds are thickening and lowering.

Let's assess this weather.........

Please take a gander at this Mid Atlantic Radar page, and let's check it out.

This area of radar returns has been getting larger all afternoon.

I went outside and looked at the sky........it has that 'looks like its going to snow' look to it. I think there is some virga overhead.

The temperature is 33 degrees, but with that 6-degree dewpoint, evaporative cooling will cause temps to fall, as will cooling after sundown. We had considerable increasing clouds all day today, and I don't think the ground warmed up much. There is ice on local ponds.

I am still thinking--------Probably flurries or very light snow tonight into tomorrow. We could pick up a half-inch of snow.

If you live in central Virginia, you could get an inch.

Looking at the national radar map, we can see a growing area of precip over the AL, MS, and GA state regions, with a moisture feed off the GOM.

IMHO, the track of this system will be everything! IF this system moves more north............there could be more snow than progged.

However, the arctic air in place IS very dry, and the column will take time to moisten up and allow snow to reach the surface and begin to accumulate.

I got this from the weather.com site....

Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service
...ALBEMARLE VA-ALLEGANY MD-ANNE ARUNDEL MD- ARLINGTON/FALLS CHURCH/ALEXANDRIA VA-AUGUSTA VA-BERKELEY WV- CALVERT MD-CARROLL MD-CHARLES MD-CLARKE VA-CULPEPER VA- DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DC-FAIRFAX VA-FAUQUIER VA-FREDERICK VA- FREDERICK MD-GRANT WV-GREENE VA-HAMPSHIRE WV-HARDY WV-HARFORD MD- HIGHLAND VA-HOWARD MD-JEFFERSON WV-KING GEORGE VA-LOUDOUN VA- MADISON VA-MINERAL WV-MONTGOMERY MD-MORGAN WV-NELSON VA- NORTHERN BALTIMORE MD-ORANGE VA-PAGE VA-PENDLETON WV- PRINCE GEORGES MD-PRINCE WILLIAM/MANASSAS/MANASSAS PARK VA- RAPPAHANNOCK VA-ROCKINGHAM VA-SHENANDOAH VA-SOUTHERN BALTIMORE MD- SPOTSYLVANIA VA-ST. MARYS MD-STAFFORD VA-WARREN VA-WASHINGTON MD-

... LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY...

A WEAK STORM SYSTEM MOVING OUT OF THE MIDWEST WILL PASS TO OUR SOUTH TONIGHT AND FRIDAY. WITH COLD ARCTIC AIR OVER THE REGION... ANY PRECIPITATION FROM THIS STORM WILL FALL IN THE FORM OF LIGHT SNOW.

THE BEST CHANCE FOR LIGHT SNOW WILL BE BETWEEN LATE THIS EVENING AND MIDDAY FRIDAY. CENTRAL VIRGINIA HAS THE BEST CHANCE FOR LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF AROUND 1 INCH SINCE IT WILL BE CLOSER TO THE PATH OF THE STORM. THE CHANCE OF SNOW LESSENS AS YOU MOVE NORTH TOWARD THE MASON DIXON LINE. UP TO AN INCH OF ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE ACROSS NORTHERN VIRGINIA... MUCH OF MARYLAND AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. NEAR THE PENNSYLVANIA BORDER... LITTLE IF ANY ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.

MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO ALLOW EXTRA TIME FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE ON FRIDAY AS ROADWAYS WILL BE SLIPPERY IN SPOTS WHERE ANY SNOW ACCUMULATES....

I would advise folks who live in Virginia: If you are going to drive tonight- be careful............our surface ground temps are cold, it was cold last night and it will be falling into the low 20s tonight. ANY snow----light or otherwise----will stick and will make roads slippery.

This is my humble opinion----I do not think this is going to be anything significant----but let's keep an eye out anyway. This pattern is conducive to anything happening, but I still think N VA will see a few flurries, to possibly half an inch, and I am emphasizing the few flurries for N VA.

Around the Mid Atlantic, sometimes you never know what will happen.......

Temperature is 32 degrees; the dewpoint has come up a degree to 7 degrees as moistening of the atmosphere continues with virga overhead.

EDIT!!!!! The Dewpoint just rose to 10 degrees!!!!! C'Mon NOW!!! Let's get that atmosphere all moistened up!! :)

Another EDIT!!! Dewpoint is now 11 degrees!!!

Edit...........Dewpoint is up to 12 degrees!!

Still another Edit.......FYI, the temp is steady at 32 degrees.....lowering cloud deck is holding it up.......but the dewpoint continues to trend upward....now its 13 degrees!!

Nice ob, Lowpressure. Our dewpoint is 13 degrees, your 18 dewpoint with occasional flurries tells me to expect flurries when our dewpoint rises to 18 degrees. At the current rate of the rise of the dewpoint.......It should be about 1 to 2 hours from now:) :)

EDIT!!!! Our dewpoint is up to 15 degrees!!!! It's coming up nicely! The atmosphere is definately moistening up! I'm looking forward to a few flurries!!!

EDIT!! WOW!! WOW!! Dewpoint is 16!!!!! It took only about 5 minutes to go up another degree!!! WOW!!!

EDIT!! Dewpoint is up to 17 degrees!!! Temperature has fallen to 31 degrees!!

I hope you get some moderate snow down in Fredericksburg!!! :)

Hey Eric the radars indicate a good solid area of snow for you. I wouldn't be surprised to see you pick up a good 1 to 2 inches overnight. Additionally, you may be clipped by more snow from the GOM system as it translates east. :)

I wouldn't be surprised either, Jeb, as areas here along the NC/VA border have gotten a headstart on the flakes even before the other precipitation arrives later from GA and SC! :D

Enjoy the SNOW, Bro, as I will be, too!! :D

Will have to hear the latest on travel conditions in the morning...if TOO slick out there may call the copy center where I work part-time and size up the situation. My supervisor as well as the manager are both very flexible. :) But then if they are there...I'd feel guilty not going in. :-?

We're 30 degrees with 20 degree dewpoints-------------------but the precip moved east. Holding out hope that some of the light flurries west of us will give us a coating-------but am beginning to think we may have a near-miss here too. It's a shame..............so much snow so close and the atmosphere is getting saturated, but oh so close but no cigar.

I knew all along that we'd get only flurries. However, I did not realize that it would be this close. I'm still hoping for a stray flurry or lone flake........I'll be meticulously be watching the radars into 1am tomorrow morning.

I'm thankful though.......I have arctic air! :) :) :)

Sure I'm hard-core LOL LOL LOL !!!!! :)

Temp 30 degrees; dewpoint 20 degrees with an area of snow directly overhead and no snow reaching the ground.

This is an illustration of just dry this air is folks. We have seen the dewpoint rise from 6 degrees to 20 degrees this evening and the ambient temperature has fallen two degrees to 30. However, with snow radar echoes directly overhead.............we are seeing no flurries, no light snow, not even one lonely flake.

The air is just too dry.

I'm still holding out hope for a flurry or two :) :)

I'll still be manning the radars at 1am.
