Winter Weather Summary
POSTED: January 7, 2004 6:31 a.m.

Lake-Effect Snow Continues, as does the Western Snow

Cold air over the northeastern United states, along with westerly winds is leading to snow off the Great Lakes Wednesday and Wednesday night. The best snowfall will be Wednesday morning due to winds being better aligned to start the day, then the snow bands will become more erratic Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. Snow will accumulate another 6-12 inches to the east of lakes Erie and Ontario before diminishing some later today. Up to 2 feet of additional snow will be possible in areas east of Lake Ontario with snowfall rates this morning falling at 3-4 inches per hour. Lesser amounts of snow will fall to the east of Lake Michigan and over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Late tonight another wave will move into the northern Plains and shift slowly southward leading to snow showers over the Dakotas into Iowa and eastern Nebraska. This will bring around an inch or so of snowfall.

The weather pattern will remain quite active in the West with snow over the mountains accumulating 6-12 inches with locally higher amounts as a front and associated moisture moves eastward. This snowfall will continue inland over Washington and Oregon with arctic air in Place. This snow will accumulate up to 6 inches and could mix with sleet. Snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue to be a concern over the western interior from Portland to Seattle. Travel along these areas will be quite treacherous. Snow will fall farther east into the Wasatch and northern Colorado Rockies where 1-3 inches of snow will be possible.
