If this map is accurate, it seems that we may not have the ability to employ all our resources, since there's a lot of uncommitted/hostile real estate we'd have to arrange to cross by air to get it where we need it.

While the Saudi's have been very quite publicly the reports that I've read show that they are supporting our efforts for the war against Saddam. I'm sure that Turkey will allow overflight rights as well even if they don't let us base troops there for a northern offensive.

While I am frustrated with Turkey as well they have been a long and active friend of the US for decades. Turkey allowed US intelligence gathering activities against the Soviets all through the the Cold War and have allowed their bases to be used both for the 91 war and the subsequent enforcement of the Northern No-fly Zone. To call them chicken is just not accurate. Their polls show over 90% of the people to be against the war. For their government to even consider the US proposal is courageous IMO. Just think what we would have to say if our government was considering any issue that had a 90% opposition rate.

I was stationed aboard the USS America CV-66 back in 1978-80, I did 2 tours of duty in the Med with the 6th Fleet, even back THEN Turkey was very chicken sh** over us flying near or near their borders! The only time they really backed us was when Momar Kadafi (SP) shot down one of our F-14 Tomcats (the squadron was VF-145)

Today's reports indicate that the Turks are moving their own troops and armor to the Iraq frontier in a general mobilization; does this mean that they want a piece of the action, or just indercepting Kurdish refugees? :?:

I believe it is to keep refugees out of their country. So yes, streetsoldier, it is to keep the Kurds out.

The Turks and Kurds have been fighting for years. As crazy it may sound, the United States needs to be in Turkey to protect the Kurds from the Turks.
