Does the 2003 map look similar to 1992?

Why 92-93 analog hold no merit IMHO...

I've seen the 92-93 analog in another thread on WWBB. But I see NO such resemblance. I'll let you decide ... does these two maps look even remotely similar?

First of all, NO SCAND blocking, NO PV in Eastern Canada, for starters if you wanna compare actual dates 12/27/92 and currently. And to kick it off, the US is in zonal flow in 1992, while currently, 2003 ridge Eastern/Central, trough West.

Also, the QBO and SOI values are vastly different. The QBO values are as different as night and day on Dec 27th, 1992 and 2003. In 1992, the QBO was already WEST, meanstwhile, the QBO remains WAY NEG (EAST) now.

SOI values ---

SST's - somewhat similar -

Again, I do NOT know why 92-93 is even considered ...

Not even close... 92/93 was definitely an ENSO winter, 03/04 will be more neutral if not La Nina oriented. Plus like SF mentioned, you can see the zonal in Dec 92 and the SE Ridge right now.

Honestly, it will probably be a long time before we see another 01-02 type winter. They are rare.

U R right SF! That is purely zonal in 92-93 and we are not in a zonal now for sure. Doesn't look like we will be going zonal anytime soon either. And as stated, the maps show an ENSO pattern for 92-93 which we definitely do not have this winter.

This implies map reading skills. Certainly the minority think these maps are similar.
