New to the board and Meteorology

#1 Postby nywx » Tue Dec 16, 2003 12:08 am

Hello everyone... I am a new member to this board and am not a professional, I am just a man attempting to understand the field they call, "Weather" and the model analysis that seems pretty exciting. I have been weather surfing many boards and notice many things I never can understand and that is why I am here... My posts will usually consist of question regarding words that I can't understand. I will not be annoying, my goal is to learn as much as the pro mets we have here such as RNS, DT and many more.
I have been reading a lot about UVV, what is that and what does it have to do with weather exactly? Also, PNA has been a popular discussion around the boards, I believe that it has something to do or conflict with NAO (which I understand.) What is PNA and how can you track that via the cpu models?
I really appreciate any assistance given now and in the future by you fine fellow weather followers, thanks again!

UVV stands for Upward Vertical Velocity...which accounts for rising air motions in the atmosphere. Analysis of Q-vectors can unmask areas of rising air motions. (Q-vectors are a mathematical feature and do not exist in the atmosphere) Q-vectors represent rising motions caused by both differential vorticity advection and temperature (or thickness) advection. (q-vector divergence and convergence mathematically are essentially the same).

Welcome nywx!

RNS, thank you for the information about UVV (Upward Vertical Velocity). I've read about UVV a few times and generally understand it. I have also know about Q-vectors from a couple weather books I have.
