It's approaching 8am here..................
I know I said earlier that I would be at church and that you wouldn't hear from me until 3pm.
However, we have been kind of surprised by this weather system here in northern Virginia this morning.
To sum up: The snow started here at 120am this morning. It took a while for the atmosphere to moisten up before we saw flurries. By 2am we had steady light to moderate snow, and the temperature had fallen to 28 degrees with dewpoints up to 16 degrees. By 230am temp was 27 with dewpoint of 18. The snow was moderate. At 230 am we had about half an inch of snow on the roads, sidewalks, and on the grass, shrubbery, car tops and fences.
I got up at 550am and the snow was moderate with heavier flakes a half inch across. It was quite impressive looking. The snow was three to four inches deep then.
By 7am the snow had changed over to sleet and freezing rain. The depth looked to be 5 to possibly 6 inches.
It's 756am now as I make this report and I am observing moderate freezing rain and sleet at a temperature of 29 degrees, dewpoint 21 degrees. Winds are north at 9mph, gusts to 19. Wind chills are abysmal, in the raw single digits.
The scenery outside is really something else. I didn't expect to see this much snow. It is very, very interesting, although it is nothing compared to what places like Binghamton, NY are going to get clobbered with by Monday afternoon.
Can we say 24 to 36 inches in Binghamton?
The plow operators here are gonna be in seventh heaven, even with the heavy rain all day.
Okay folks, its now time we consulted the radar again.
Roanoke,Va radar
Charlotte, NC radar
There is a LOT of snow up north, to say the least. The coastal low is going to town with moisture and it's gonna be hell here in northern Virginia with way, way too much rain today. The Charlotte, NC radar illustrates my point well. Check out those yellows over the Carolinas. We are going to experience some very, very heavy rain today. If we see FOUR INCHES of rain here, I would not be surprised. The coastal is winding up like a world-class pitcher in the ninth with one hell of a fast curve and the batter struck out. That's what were gonna feel like by tonight with creeks rising out of their banks and wreaking havoc.
See all the rain echoes in the Carolinas and SE Virginia? When that moisture slams into the cold air up north and east, there's going to be hell to pay. Folks will be measuring snow in feet and I suspect in spots like Aroostook County in Maine, with a yardstick. They did just that last week, weighing in at 50 inches.
There are folks all up and down the coast that are going to be measuring this rain in inches today through tomorrow. The eastern seaboard is not in a drought. Many places are way above normal for the year and this extra rain is only adding insult to injury. What's far worse, another potent storm is forecast to develop midweek with an insane 28.60 pressure and very high winds. This monster (midweek) will unload more torrential rain upon areas already brimming with water and in some cases, feet deep in fresh snowpack. This may be a major disaster about to unfold up and down the eastern seaboard, and not just on the coast later this week.
Yup folks this'll be one storm to remember when it finally moves off north and east by Monday night and Tuesday.
Don't rest yet; Another behemoth storm is gonna punish us some more come Wednesday and Thursday with several boatloads of torrential rain on the coast and the big metropolises and crushing snows inland.
If you don't mind, I must excuse myself, I've got an ark to build and the wood is buried under snow and sleet and a layer of ice.
Whoa there. Sorry about the tangent. lol
LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!
I'll keep ya all updated........

If this were all snow , it would be incredible here. Ended up with 3-4 inches of snow so far with ice everywhere. Trees are ice covered- looks like Christmas outside. Rain is starting to pack snow and turn to piles of slush 4 inches deep-nice. Jeb- I thought it might be a bit more than you were expecting when it started adding up down here.

I have this feeling that later this season, we will see just that------major nor'easters with very heavy incredible snows accumulating in Fredericksburg and Woodbridge. This seems to be our year for one major nor'easter after another. Imagine what it's gonna be like once it gets colder with these beasts. Our cities will be the places getting clobbered with two feet of snow.
Then the digging will begin in earnest.
All I can say is,
BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's pouring rain here at 30 degrees, 22 degree dewpoint.

Well folks its 310 pm here.
The winds are becoming more north and even northwest.
What does that tell me?
It tells me that the Low is at my Latitude or north!!!!
WOOO-HOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO MORE WARM AIR!!!!! Now we get the North Wind Fields!!!!
Guess what? We still have a light rain but the temperature has fallen from a high of 33 down to 31 degrees!!!!!!! Winds are north at 13mph, gusting to 20!
Bring on that colder air, baby!!!!! Perhaps we will have some consolational light flurries!!!!
Winds are north at 13 to 20. Temps are down to 31 degrees. Dewpoint is 27. Pressure is 29.72 and falling. Hopefully we'll get some overnight lows in the 20s that'll put the FREEZE on that snow/slush!
Come ON, baby, change on over to some light snow!!!! No more of this Rain slop!!!
More updates coming .......
