no but u people dont understand...all the local mets here bash the nws all the time because the upton office that does nyc's weather has a tendency for putting watches, warnings, and advisories out at some ridiculous times..for those of u that are in nyc might know...the upton office really does suck.

I'm not all into bashing the NWS, as I have visited their office in Upton, NY and have gained alot of respect for them for what they do. But I do find it odd, that you would have a Winter Storm Watch posted for Boston and not NYC. They have a similar forecast to ours, except their forecast snowfall amounts are a bit higher. A SPS is not the same as issuing a warning, watches, or even advisories. The media doesn't hype nearly as much on SPS as much as the do with a Winter Storm Watch or Warning. It like with a tropical systems. The NHC could issue a bunch special disturbance statements on system, but you won't here about in the news until it get's a name.

If NYC is only forecasting 2-4" then it would be unprofessional for them to post a Winter Storm Watch. 4" isn't a big deal in NYC even though TWC would have you think so.

"all the local mets" do not bash Upton....only those who are trying to puff up their own egos, IMO. Are there less qualified NWS mets....naturally. But the main problem is that a "local" met can speculate on 30" snow everytime a s/w is forecast to move near NYC. Just because Upton (among many others) does not forecast Jan 1996 everytime a clipper goes by, the weenie population gets in arrears. Then the one time a year or so when decent storm happens, if the NWS does not sniff it out before the first hack does, they are just terrible. The weenies get upset when the office does not even speculate on 30 inches of snow.
The NWS is there to serve the public not the weenie. It does not help the public to bark about mega storms every week since they likely occur once a year, decade or century. Most of the time, storms end up being remarkably unremarkable and the weenie moves on to the next short wave. In this case, will you, James5o4, retract you statement if NYC does get only 3-5 inches of snow before going to rain? Perhaps only because you are being called on it?

Perhaps you should review the criteria, then there might be a better understanding of what goes on when...

I would not bash the NWS. They are the ones who issue the at times could be "Life saving" warnings. Sometimes I disagree with some of the calls they may make, but I must say I do appreciate the job they do.
One of the calls they made is what kept me alive. It was the Osceola County tornado warning on 2/23/98

OKX 3:00pm AFD
I have just read their latest AFD and found it to be totally reasonable. WSWs for interior for 8-13 inches, WWA for NYC and LI for 3-5 inches before change over...Flood Watch for Sunday night...all this on Saturday afternoon giving the general public plenty of time to prepare. Cannot find anything which would be equivocated with "sucking"...

You just didn't hear it on the NOAA Wx Radio. They make sucking noises while reading the forecast. I am sure that is what he meant.

'NWS sucks' is weenie talk for: "My misinterpretation of models, data, and surface observations leads me to believe that I will receive a historic snowstorm. The NWS does not agree. Therefore, they suck."
Just to be clear.
I am fully certified in weenie spotting from WWBB...Just spewing on one to get out my frustrations I suppose...

Totally agree...100%. Look at the tornado outbreak in OKC in 1999, and the recent outbreak in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska this past May. Timely and accurate warnings to protect lives. These knowledgable men and women deserve respect.
IT IS WEATHER, CAN'T ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT!

Mr. bob....im in no way crazy for the snow. If u wanna go as far as referring to "weenies", then be my guest. But, i want u to understand that i said "NWS sucks" because i want them to tell me that we're in store for 30 inches of snow. Trust me, i dont want all that snow. But, for the sake of my life and job, i would like it if they post something. (which, NOW they did). But, i was showing my frustration of the upton office being so late on their statements. I am in no way crazy for the snow. Now, the local mets DO NOT bash the NWS, ur right. But they, too, are frustrated with the Upton ooffice of NWS because of their lateness in posting statements.

Dont care who you are, or what your opinion of the NWS is, but to bash them is just rediculous. Most bashing is due to members getting upset because they are not calling for weather that they "want" in there area. Totaly rediculous and very imature
Yes indeed. The National Weather Service has trained weather forecasters that try their hardest to come out with a correct forecast for the counties or parishes they cover.
