One of my favorite things I do early each morning I get into work is peruse the foreign press. I like to know what they think of us. Apparently not much.

The latest fuel for their anti-U.S. fire is the White House's position on Iraqi contracts (search) that only coalition-supporting countries need apply.

The French called it arrogant. Actually the French calling anyone arrogant would be like me chastising someone for not eating a salad... don't go there. But I digress.

The Germans called President Bush cavalier.

The Belgians, selfish.

South Korea says we're sending the wrong message.

And on and on.

Sometimes when I get a little tired, I get a little blunt. It's a good thing I'm not president of the United States, because I'd just snap.

I'd tell the Germans, who don't like our thousands of troops there, all right, I'm pulling them out of there.

I'd tell the French, who don't like our intervening in conflicts, next time you get a butcher from Bosnia, "you" have at it.

I'd tell the South Koreans, if we're such an annoyance protecting your sorry asses from that nut in the pajamas just north of you, "you" deal with the nut in pajamas. We'll sit this one out.

Frankly I'm sick and tired of countries that say they're sick and tired of us.

If you hate us so much, do without our dollars. Do without our troops. Do without our aid. And support. Our security. And our help. Do without those things that deep inside you know you can't live without.

We're not a perfect country. But I'll tell you what, we're not a smarmy, wormy, back-stabbing, double-crossing, second-guessing, two-bit butt-licking phony country.

What you see is what you get.

Look, we don't expect a thank you in this country. But we're due a hell of a lot more than a screw you in this country.

So Jacques, the next time some butcher's at your doorstep and you come screaming to us for help, don't be surprised if we take a pass and suggest "you," take a stand.

I won't hold my breath waiting for that headline.

Besides, Paolo, I'd think your government would be THRILLED to be "in the bidding" as they ARE for contracts to rebuild Iraq; God knows Italy's economy needs a shot in the arm. :-?

Speaking of which, your country makes some of the best combat knives in the world, "Extrema Ratio" (I'm a collector); it would be good to see some of that technology going into helping a long-battered people thrive and prosper, no?

Perhaps you should re-examine the works of another of your countrymen, Niccolo Machiavelli...it's clear you are in need of a tutorial in Realpolitik.

Just yesterday I was watching TV, Sudan in 20years has meant 2millions death and 6millions refugees...
My prayers now is that Iraq is set free ASAP to allow our good friends to go there as well.

By the way, I get the same feelings about France and Germany...
They are as much guilty as US and Italy for having let Saddam and Osama become what they become. They are the result of our business.

I whish you all a merry christmas, a wonderful and prosperous 2004 and
a better future for our poor planet.
Oil's gonna finish one day, maybe the next bright era will start thanks to a different spark.

Ungrateful, or a short memory. I can remember a story a while back on South Korea, and about how those who lived during the Korean War are thankful to have American troops there, but those who are younger are the ones shouting in the streets for the Americans to go home. How quickly they forget.

The United Nations has been deeply involved in Sudan, primarily in humanitarian activities. It launched an ongoing relief operation called Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS) in 1989. OLS, a consortium of UN agencies and three dozen nongovernmental organizations, supplies food and other humanitarian assistance to both government and rebel-controlled territories but depends on the permission of both sides to operate.

The UN Security Council in 1996 imposed diplomatic and travel sanctions on Sudan for its alleged involvement in a 1995 assassination attempt against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa. At Cairo's initiative, the sanctions were lifted in October 2001.


20 years huh? The UN has been there for 14 years!! If you go to the link, you will see the US has been working hard against the Sudan regime and closely with the EU. I guess that isn't the kind of news you like to hear about the evil US.
