The city of Florence has joined the United States Attorney's office to try to recover money embezzled by the city's former finance director.
Ron Epling was sentenced to 16 years in prison for stealing more than $2 million from the city.

He was serving the sentence when he died in prison in October.

Mayor Diane Whalen said the city is still trying to recover from the crime and is making every effort to get money back.

"We are determined to seek recovery of all Florence funds including monies that may have gone into local hair salons known as Great Clips, retirement funds, real estate in Boone County, real estate in Hamilton County, and all tained assets wherever we can find them. We are on a mission that won't stop until any existing assets are recovered," said Diane Whalen, Mayor of Florence.

Those named in the city's suit include Epling's widow, Billie, Kentucky Retirement Systems, E-Clips, Inc. and the maker of the software company Epling used to cover up the thefts.
