DALLAS, Texas -- Investigators Thursday raided the Dallas Sheriff's Department, essentially shutting the office down.
About 20 Collin County officials swarmed into the office of Sheriff Jim Bowles just before 10 a.m. as part of an investigation into potential misconduct.
The officials brought boxes with them that they later filled with items from the office and carted off.
High-ranking Dallas officials were forced to wait in a hall while the raid took place.
The spokesman with the Dallas Sheriff's Department said the raid outraged him.
"Basically, this has shut down the office of the sheriff," Don Peritz said. "We were ordered not to answer any cellular telephones. We were ordered not to answer any incoming telephone lines. So, if the public did call the Sheriff's Office, the phones didn't get answered."
However, NBC 5 reported that emergency calls to the Sheriff's Office were answered, and that deputies on patrol will still able to carry out their work.
Thursday's raid was the second time investigators collected evidence while attempting to build a case against Bowles.
According to prosecutors, Bowles improperly awarded a jail commissary contract to a friend.
However, Bowles has maintained that he did nothing wrong, and that the investigation is largely the work of political opponents.
