DALLAS, Texas - On one end of the court, it looked like that NBA 50th Anniversary Team.

Shaq. Kobe. Malone and Payton.

And at the other end, the dream team. The Mavericks. Still nursing the same dream, after all these years.

You know that dream in which you run and run, and gasp and stumble, and the end doesn't seem to get any closer?

That's the Mavericks' highlight film. Starring, again this season, the show-stealing Los Angeles Lakers.

The Mavericks may be thicker this season. They may be more athletic. They may have that certain something, that je ne sais quoi that will distinguish them from the franchise also-rans of their recent past.
