Winter Storm Develops in Midwest

Winter Storm Develops in Midwest
2PM EST, December 3, 2003

The same storm that is likely to have a major impact along the east coast from late Thursday into the weekend had already caused havoc in parts of the Midwest early Wednesday.

The storm was forming on the edge of the cold air mass that gripped the
northeast and Great Lakes. With warmer air moving into the Ohio
and Mississippi Valleys, only a small area - much of Iowa - was cold enough to see frozen precipitation. However, where it snowed overnight, heavy accumulations were found in many areas.

4 to 8 inches was reported across much of western and central Iowa with the highest amounts falling in rural areas between Sioux City and Des Moines. WeatherBug cameras across the state from Boxholm to Sioux City showed the snow accumulations.

Winter weather advisories for Iowa have expired as the significant
precipitation has shifted south of there. Where most of the heavy precipitation was falling - over southern Missouri and
Arkansas - it was in the form of rain. A WeatherBug live sensor in Carthage in southwest Missouri picked up 0.63" early Wednesday.
As the storm moves southeastward by Thursday, concerns for wintry
precipitation will shift toward the southern Appalachians from the
Carolinas into parts of Virginia and West Virginia.

The cold air in these areas will be rather shallow, with snow likely to
quickly change to sleet and freezing rain, and eventually to rain. Snow
accumulations of only 1 to 3 inches are expected. However, a winter storm
watch is already up for those areas for Thursday, with the potential for
significant icing.

I live close to Carthage!!!! Okay...sorry about that! Sometimes I get celeb happy.

We picked up about .55" of rain from this system. It never turned to snow, but mixed with a little sleet at the onset.
