Cold Cold Winter

#1 Postby HeartofNC » Tue Dec 02, 2003 8:16 pm

To any of you who might be offended, please know I mean no harm by this . . .

A young Indian man had just become the youngest chief of his tribe. It had been an unusually chilly fall, and he was worried that his tribe would
suffer during the coming winter. He told the tribe to start gathering wood to burn. He also went to see a meteorologist to find out what the long-range forecast would be so he could help his tribe prepare.

"Will this be a cold winter?" the young chief asked. "Yes, it will be a very cold winter," replied the meteorologist. The young chief went back to his tribe and instructed them to begin gathering a lot more firewood to keep them warm. Just to be sure, he visited a second meteorologist to confirm the harsh winter.

"Will this be a cold winter?" asked the chief. "Yes," replied the second meteorologist, "It will be very, very cold winter." The young chief, now
very concerned for the welfare of his tribe, went back and told them to gather even more wood. Just to be sure, since he was young and inexperienced, he consulted a third meteorologist.

"Will this be a cold winter?" the chief asked. "Yes, it will be an unusually cold, harsh winter." "You're the third meteorologist to tell me this," the young chief said. "How do you know this?" "Well," the the
third meteorologist replied, "The Indians are gathering up firewood like crazy."

We have a saying on the Fort Apache Indian Rez....it's the opposite, "You can tell what the winter will be like by the number of white people cutting wood!"
