Friends don't let friends save $1.5 million on jail food

By Bud Kennedy, Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Your tax dollars are at stake today in Tarrant County.

County commissioners face a $1.5 million question. Do they:

Save money by hiring a big national company to feed jail inmates?

Or spend potentially $1.5 million extra to hire one of two good local companies they already know well -- politically, perhaps too well?

The winning bidder will get a $3 million-plus annual contract to serve more than 3,000 breakfasts, lunches and dinners every day for a year. The contract could be extended to five years, so the deal might cost us at least $16.5 million, maybe as much as $18 million.

I agree with your comment, seriously. Sorry, but criminals don't deserve our tax dollars to feed their loser butts. Jail is supposed to be punishment, remember?

I hope none of you ever have the mis-fortune to have a family spend time in a jail/prison. When/if you do, you may all change some of your thinking.

It might be an economic boon to hire locally....

More jobs, more money kept in the state/city.

The implication is that the local companies will cost twice as much as the national company. That's a lots of beans and taters :-)

I doubt it, Sad, but true that the family does suffer more than the inmates, but they are there for a reason and shouldn't live better than law abiding citizens. A good friend of mine is a Deputies Sheriff in St. PAul and he can verify the stories that hey live better than most families of the Middle Class.

Free cable, three square meals a day, warm (comfortable) bed, hot shower daily. Do not have to work if they do not want to. etc. etc. etc.

And I have spent a weekend in the El Paso County jail quite a few years ago, and I gotta tell ya, it ain't all that bad. So, where is the deterent to committing crimnes in the future? Answer= There is no deterent.
