Possible winter storm, keep monitoring the forecasts....

Good afternoon everyone. Looking at the latest forecast trends indicate a potentially interesting situation Friday through Sunday for the Middle Atlantic states and into the northeast as well with wintry weather potential, lots of wind, and possible coastal flooding due to the significant onshore flow and the approach of the full moon. The moon is full on December 8th and this system will potentially plague the northeast and mid atlantic December 5th-7th, thus the enhanced coastal flood threat due to the astronomically higher tides on top of the significant onshore flow.

Part of the reason for this significant northeast onshore winds are due to the pressure gradient. This will particularly be noticable Saturday and Sunday for the Mid Atlantic coast up through the New England coast as low pressure deepens rapidly off the coast. Meanwhile strong cold high pressure will be situated over Quebec. Thus the colder air could potentially be in place as this coastal storm gets it's act together. As a result, an enhance coastal flooding threat for the Mid Atlantic and northeast US coastline. However enough cold air in place could also result in a significant winter weather event, especially inland from the coastline. The exact amounts of ice and snow are undetermined at this point from Boston down through DC and Richmond. The higher snow amounts could potentially be north and west of those cities. However it's again too early to specify amounts and who will see the heaviest amounts. It will greatly depend how much cold air will be in place and how intense this coastal storm is. Location and track are key factors also. A slower moving coastal storm could result in a more significant winter wx and coastal flood threat. However the exact level of potential impact is hard to say this far out. That's why preparation is good to have in mind just in case. Everyone watching from the Appl. Mountains to the Mid Atlantic and northeast US coast need to keep an eye on this potential developing winter storm. As we draw closer to the event, more certainities will likely be in place. In the meantime, keep monitoring the situation and prepare in advance in case your area sees significant wintry precipitation, strong winds, and coastal flooding, all of which is a possibility.

Jim - thanks for the update. This situation is definitely interesting. I am still waiting until at least mid-day tomorrow before I jump on the snow sleigh. If the models continue to look wintry for my area at that time, I will definitely be on board.
