What time did you put your bird in the oven?

#1 Postby stormraiser » Thu Nov 27, 2003 4:03 am

I was up at 3 (becaue I slept through my alarm  ) I have a 30 lb bird, so it will take a while(plus my wife hid the stuffing), so I finally got it in at 3:40 EST. What time is everyone else getting up?

Hi Anthony. :)

I think that will be what time did you get up? They may visit the board
as soon as they awaken and then get ready for the day. :D

Well, with it just being myself, Michelle and my son, we got a small bird this year, 14 lbs., she will go in the oven here in about 4 hours, "AFTER" I give it a bath! My frig is colder than most I guess, I've had the bird in the frig since Sunday, and it's STILL frozen in areas.

Same here, Dennis. I just put mine in a sink full of water after having had it in the fridge since Monday. I checked it this AM and it's still frosty on the bottom. So, I guess I'll have late Thanksgiving bird.

Instead of a whole turkey, we always opt for three turkey
breasts. My Mom has two of them in her oven, and, I put
the third one in my oven at 5:50am. It's cooking slowly
on 300°F, and, it's smelling great!

Dennis - I was taught by my former home-ec teacher, eons ago, to soak all poultry in water, generously salted. For at least 30 minutes! So my turkey's getting a bath too! She said it helped drain the blood out. I don't know if that's all together true but it's just what I've always done. With chicken, I liked to wash off the water or whatever it is it's packed with (you're a former butcher!).

As I posted elsewhere, our original T Day plan was to go out to dinner and then surprise my nephew, in from Iraq for a short 2 week leave, at another family dinner later in the day. But he and his wife decided to come into town early this week. So we all got together yesterday. Then my husband offered to cook a homemade turkey dinner if we cancelled the restaurant reservation......long story short, we're having a small dinner with the four of us and my Mom. Didn't think we'd be cooking but now I'm into it. Just wish I could get to all those cobwebs.....LOL

Our bird's going in the oven around noon. Dinner at 4 or 4:30. It's an eleven pound turkey.
