Thunder-snow last night
We had our first snowfall of the season last night and this morning, a couple of inches, complete with thunder-snow last night. A lake-effect band set up right over Watertown, making snow heavy at times. Between 9-10 PM last night lightning and thunder were also with the snow...it was an amazing sight...I love winters in upstate NY.

its fairly invloved but i think many on here would benefit from knowing just what goes on during snowstorms that causes thunder and lightning to occur.

I was going to mention this yesterday when the change over occured from rain to snow...but I was at work and totally forgot. But shortly around 1:30 PM local time, a few rumbles of thunder where heard and as the rain fell very heavily right behind the front, snow began to mix in. It was really cool. By 1:45 PM, the change over from rain to snow as complete, and the drive home was very difficult with moderate snow falling and fog. No major snow accumulation occured here...with only a dusting to around a 1/2 inch fell total.

thundersnow
My greatest memory of thundersnow was in April 82 when a late season blizzard dumped nearly 2ft in our area south of Boston, Mass. The storm hit on April 7th and 8th and during the height of the storm 2 distinct flashes of lighting with attendent thunder. Quite a last hurrah to that snowy winter season.

I'm willing to bet on the thundersnow event occurred on February 9th, 1973 ... that was the Great Southern Snowstorm for Southern/Central GA and most of South Carolina (Piedmont, Midlands, and Coastal Plain) ... Rimini, SC picked up 24" of snow (the State record), Charleston, SC got 7.1" (still the greatest 24 hour snowfall) and nearby Summerville (my area) picked up 15" of snow. Too bad I was not a year old yet ... that would have been a sight! ...

Dave, nice to correspond with a former neighbor of mine. As you can see under my name... I am originally from Bridgewater, MA.
Tom, I remember that ... Jim Cantore was getting ready to report live when the lightning flashed and totally caught him offguard and boy, did he ever get excited ...
"Kristina, did you hear that!! ... We just had thunder ... snow ... currently is snowing to beat the band, and it's coming down around 4" an hour .... Big heavy wet flakes of snow ... "

Believe it or not, My first thundersnow event actually started out as a thundersleet event in January 1988 ... 28º with thundersleet ... with turned to snow 30 minutes later as the temperature dropped to 25º. Ended up getting around 3" of snow ... (too bad it didn't make the turn around the corner and head on up, 'cuz the setup would have dumped a foot here easy ...
The other thundersnow event was very cool and I couldn't believe I witnesses three thundersnow events that day (February 16th, 1996). The first came in the late afternoon from a convective thunderhead, yes, at 41º .. as soon as the storm moved in, the winds picked up to roughly 50 mph, the temp dropped 5º in minutes and a variety of precip fell, including "soft hail" - or groupel ... and very heavy snow ... 1" of snow fell in 15 minutes ... which quickly melted when the sun came back out and the first thundersnow passed on to the southeast. The second came in at 6 pm, and the third, one hour later ... Awesome upper level low to be able to generate that kind of instability with temperatures hovering around freezing.
