Freddy. And it's notable regardless due to killing almost 1500 people.

So far I've only assumed the Atlantic, but if we're doing a global list based solely on casualties this would be it. The ones I didn't fill in are the only commonly used letters without a TC with 1000+ deaths so I can't easily find the deadliest storm for those letters.

A - Agnes (1984)
B - Bopha (2012)
C -
D - Daniel (2023)
E -
F - Fifi (1974)
G - Gordon (1994)
H - Harriet (1962)
I - Ida (1945)
J - Jeanne (2004)
K - Katrina (2005)
L - Linda (1997)
M - Mitch (1998)
N - Nargis (2008)
O -
P - Paul (1982)
R -
S - Sidr (2007)
T - Thelma (1991)
U -
V - Vera (1959)
W - Wanda (1956)

Hazel for me for H. It was bad from Haiti to the Carolinas thru the Middle Atlantic States then into Canada a path of destruction on the coast then well inland. I remember it well!

M seems to be a "boom or bust" letter the last decade. There have been monster M storms (Matthew, Maria, Michael, Milton) and puny or forgettable M storms (Melissa, Mindy, Marco, Margot) with Martin in between.

I realize that some of the hurricanes have a recency factor that may make them more popular. Because If this list was asked pre-2017 I would likely have a very different list so I will try to control for that with what I think the most infamous storm with each letter is. If there isn't any storm that I think is sufficiently notorious than I simply will say there isn't a hurricane in that category. This list is also hard because certain storms may be very famous in some areas in not others.

A: Andrew (1992)
B: Betsy (1965)
C: Camille (1969)
D: Dorian (2019)
E: Edna (1954)
F: Flora (1963)
G: Gordon (1994)
H: Helene (2024)
I: Irma (2017)
J: Janet (1955)
K: Katrina (2005)
L: Laura (2020)
M: Mitch (1998)
N: Nate (2017)
O: Opal (1995)
P: Paloma (2008)
R: Rita (2005)
S: Sandy (2012)
T: Tomas (2010)
V: I do not believe there are any particularly famous V storms that would rise to the level of being infamous. Probably the most known V is Vince from 2005 though.
W: Wilma (2005)

For me personally. A=Alicia
And I will jump to H for Harvey
I have been thru many cyclones, don't remember some, but Alicia and Harvey impacted my world in 2 very different ways. So, for now, those are my top 2. (Personally speaking)

I decided to make a fully subjective list with no particular metrics (strength, impact, my memory, whatever), so it's not exactly "infamous" or impact-based.

I also decided to include all basins just for some unconventionality. That said, my knowledge outside the Atlantic isn't as exhaustive, so a non-ATL storm not being included is probably just because I forgot about it.

If I used a non-ATL storm for the top spot, I'll give an Atlantic runner-up.

I intend absolutely no dig to you at all here and mean absolutely zero offense, since you said the list is subjective. But this definitely seems like a recency bias moment. Mitch was far worse than Melissa in terms of human impacts. With over 11k fatalities, it is easily the most “infamous” M storm.

I agree with weeniepatrol that Mitch probably deserves to be here. Although Melissa is a close second. Even though it’s recent, I expect it will be a very talked-about system for years to come.

I’d also argue Yagi ‘24 should be on here, as one of the costliest WPac systems on record with up to 1,000+ fatalities.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

The Ms are just horrible all around. Different places bore extremely devastating, relatively historic impacts. Mitch for Central America, Matthew for Haiti, Maria for Puerto Rico and Dominica, Michael for the Florida Panhandle, and Melissa for Jamaica. All Category 5s at their peak too.

With that being said, I think objectively Mitch is the most infamous "M" storm, and it mainly has to do with being the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history. Also, its strength was nothing to scoff at either, being the 10th most intense Atlantic hurricane and having 180 mph winds. In terms of M storms, it's surreal that Mitch seems like a "weak" one now that Milton and Melissa have entered the picture.

Overall, I think Mitch is the most infamous M storm. However, there are two honorary mentions: Maria and Melissa. Both in terms of raw strength and ultimate impacts. Maria being the deadliest Atlantic hurricane in recent years, and Melissa being the most powerful (I'm betting on the idea that Melissa may be upgraded to a 190 mph storm with an 890 or 891 mbar pressure upon post-analysis).

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.
