We are looking at one of the most -AO's for late February. Whatever cold there is in Canada will get dislodged from its usual home, so it will get really cold somewhere...

To put into perspective, the -AO we experienced in January was the strongest since December '22. This coming one is looking deeper than the one in January.

Ntxw can you still get very cold even with a EPO thats kind of just meh? I would figure an extreme - AO would be enough to do the trick, obviously the PNA is a big factor here as wel

Yes. The EPO in January was nothing noteworthy running 1-2 SD's negative and Feb 21 was barely negative. The more important factor is to not have an Alaskan low pressure vortex.

Freezing drizzle here with what appears to be thundersleet towards OKC  good thing the city schools closed already

We may be continuing the trend of overperforming winter events here because yesterday they didn't even think we'd be cold enough

Pretty strong storm moving through DFW airport right now, this is wild. Lookng at the radar looks like the snow/sleet starts right south of OKC. I'll be watching my winter storm chaser feeds tomorrow for sure. A good weather week for observing the fun others are having.

Man the 06z GFS is getting very close to showing a winter storm in the deep south again, setup with coastal low looks similar to the late january event , at least with the coastal low and cold air, not necessarily p-type

12z Icon is a bit chilly for late Feb...not too different than its prior run.

The ICON is also less progressive with the shortwave and brings back snow to the Panhandle/NW Texas. With ice in east Texas.

AO could touch -5SD's which verification wise is extremely difficult to do. The last -5 was Feb 2021. Not saying that kind of pattern but we don't go this low without some kind of wintry event happening.

GEFS (more important than the operational at this range) is beginning to show some of that positive PNA influence that I mentioned yesterday next week as it drives core of the cold from the plains toward the SE. Texas gets another brush with some cold but looks manageable for now with very little winter precip signal from its members.

ICON OP definitely the outlier as the ensemble is much warmer 180 hours out.

Yeah if I lived in the SE states (northern areas in particular) or across the Tennessee valley, I would be feeling pretty good about cashing in on some winter weather based on the look of this pattern next week.

Yeah that’s a pretty big positive signal as well. More so than the last -AO episode in Jan.
