#1 Postby weatherlover427 » Sat Nov 22, 2003 3:15 pm

*irrelevant areas removed*

...A WIND ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE ORANGE COUNTY COASTAL PLAIN UNTIL 230 PM SUNDAY...

.A TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE MOVING THROUGH CALIFORNIA TODAY WILL PRODUCE STRONG GUSTY NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS THIS MORNING. THE WINDS WILL BECOME NORTHEAST AND INCREASE IN AREAS WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS LATE MORNING AND CONTINUE INTO MIDDAY SUNDAY. THE WINDS WILL DIMINISH SUNDAY AFTERNOON. REDUCED VISIBILITY IN BLOWING DUST AND SAND IS LIKELY AT TIMES IN THE DESERTS. TRAVEL MAY BECOME DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF STRONG CROSSWINDS...ESPECIALLY BELOW CANYONS AND PASSES. PEOPLE IN THESE WINDY AREAS SHOULD WATCH FOR BROKEN TREE LIMBS AND DOWNED POWER LINES.

LAX-DAG is the most commonly used indicator of whether we're under an onshore or offshore flow. If you read the forecast discussion often, you see it mentioned very often. It's just the SLP at LAX subtracted from the SLP at DAG. So, a negative number means offshore flow. So, it was -3.4mb LAX-DAG indicating a weak-moderate offshore flow. -11.2mb is the 24 hour change which indicates that the gradient is trending offshore strongly (as you can tell by the increasing winds today). For northerly winds, LAX-BFL (lax to bakersfield) is commonly used. That has been very strong, especially last night when I believe it was near -7. Had wind gusts up to 30-40mph last night. OC is less susceptible to N and NW winds, while more susceptible to NE winds, so tomorrow should be your day for strong winds.

Looks like it's gone up a bit, which is good for those who like offshore winds (like me ;) ).

Update: Just went outside. The Santa Anas have hit my area. Nothing bad yet, just gusting 20 MPH or so from the NNE.
